🔥 Truth OR TRAFFIC? THE TRUE MEANING OF ADVOCACY
I have come to realise that some of the confusion reaching Zambians through social media is being amplified by journalists and content creators based outside Zambia, particularly in the UK, USA, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Social media platforms are monetised, and for some creators, controversy can bring followers, views and income. Some even proudly describe themselves as “Facebook kings” because of their numbers. But having thousands of followers does not automatically make someone a credible advocate.
During this election period, we have seen some platforms repeatedly attacking the newly re elected President Hakainde Hichilema, BM8 and others, sometimes before all the facts surrounding particular events have been established.
Regarding what happened that night, much still needs to be established. No complete video or footage has publicly provided the entire picture, and the law is taking its course. We should allow the relevant institutions to investigate rather than allowing social media to become the courtroom.
Advocacy should never be confused with insults, propaganda or political hostility.
A TRUE ADVOCATE SHOULD:
• Seek truth before making accusations.
• Verify information before publishing it.
• Criticise policies without insulting individuals.
• Allow the law to take its course.
• Hold both government and opposition accountable.
• Admit and correct mistakes.
• Educate rather than deliberately create confusion.
• Put public interest above followers, likes and monetisation.
Being critical of government is democratic. Supporting government is also a personal choice. Neither should replace facts and evidence.
🇿🇲 In the age of monetised social media, let us not confuse popularity with credibility.
Truth before traffic. Facts before accusations. Zambia before personal agendas.
