During the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, we are reminded of the urgent need to create safer, more gender-sensitive spaces, both online and offline. With 1 in 3 women experiencing GBV and digital abuse on the rise, journalists and newsrooms must play an active role in promoting equality, challenging harmful stereotypes, and reporting ethically to uphold the dignity of survivors. Together, through stronger laws, education, and collective advocacy, we can help build a world where women and girls live free from violence.

Today, we stand in solidarity with thousands across South Africa for the G20 Women's Shutdown, a united call for justice, safety, and accountability for every victim and survivor whose voice has been ignored for far too long.

If you cannot make it to the lie-down meeting points at 12:00 pm, you can still join the movement and do so in your own space. Women For Change will be livestreaming on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, where they will read the names of the women who never made it home.

Together, we will continue the fight until every home, street, and institution is safe.

Stories shape how we see the world, and when diverse voices are included, they make those stories richer, fairer, and more human. From African creators redefining the continent’s image to brands like Bathu celebrating local pride, inclusive storytelling connects generations, preserves culture, and challenges stereotypes. Whether in media, organisations, or communities, every voice matters because a story told by many is a story that truly belongs to everyone.
