Discover the World of Aviation Cartography with Jaynthri Govender!
A passion for aviation, technology, and maps has shaped Jaynthri Govender’s inspiring career as an Inspector of Pans Operations/Cartography at the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA). In her critical role, Jaynthri and her team ensure the skies remain safe for both pilots and passengers, working tirelessly behind the scenes to maintain the accuracy of aviation charts that are vital for flight safety.
What is Aviation Cartography?
Jaynthri describes aviation cartography as the art and science of creating detailed maps and charts that pilots rely on to navigate the skies safely. Jaynthri explains, "These charts—ranging from instrument approach to aeronautical charts—provide crucial information on terrain, obstacles, and flight paths, guiding pilots in and out of airports. It’s a blend of art, technology, and precision, where accuracy is paramount."
These intricate designs ensure that air travel remains safe and efficient for passengers and crew alike.
How Did Jaynthri Start in This Fascinating Field?
Jaynthri’s journey into aviation cartography began as a technical designer in the South African Defence Force, where she worked with flight information manuals. While collaborating with pilots, her curiosity grew about the work done behind the scenes to ensure the safety of flights. This curiosity led her to transition from technical drawing to studying procedure design—a field that focuses on creating the procedures pilots follow while flying.
In 2007, Jaynthri joined the SACAA as a procedure designer. She soon gained extensive training in Pans Operations and Cartography, ultimately becoming one of the few internationally recognised cartographers in South Africa. Today, she oversees the companies that produce aviation charts, ensuring their accuracy and safety for pilots.
The Unsung Heroes of Air Travel: Aviation Cartographers
Aviation cartographers are the unsung heroes who help ensure air travel is as safe as possible. Without accurate maps and charts, pilots would face significant challenges in navigating the skies, potentially jeopardisin the safety of flights. Jaynthri’s role as an inspector is crucial, ensuring that these vital charts are produced to the highest standards.
With advancements in technology, particularly artificial intelligence, many aspects of cartography are expected to be automated. However, Jaynthri emphasises that human input will always be essential in developing and maintaining these systems. "AI can support the process, but the expertise and decision-making involved in creating accurate charts still require a human touch", she says.
The Rewarding Aspect of the Job
For Jaynthri, the most rewarding part of her job is knowing that her work directly contributes to the safety of air travel. She likens aviation cartography to creating pathways in the sky, similar to how road maps guide drivers. "It’s fascinating to be part of the process that helps flights operate smoothly and safely", she says, reflecting on the impact her work has on the aviation industry.
