MADLANGA COMMISSION | JUSTICE MADLANGA WARNS OF DEEP CRIMINALITY

Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga has raised serious concerns about the evidence presented before the Madlanga Commission, saying it has painted a grim picture of South Africa’s criminal justice system.

Today, 17 September 2026, marks one year since the commission’s public hearings began, following its establishment in July 2025.

The commission was established to investigate allegations of corruption, criminality and political interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system.

Reflecting on the evidence heard over the past year, Justice Madlanga said it has become evident that deep criminality runs within the system.

The commission continues to hear testimony as it examines the allegations and seeks to establish the extent of the problems facing the country’s criminal justice system.

One year of public hearings — and the evidence continues to raise serious questions.

MADLANGA COMMISSION | ONE YEAR LATER

Today marks one year since the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry began its public hearings, following allegations that shook South Africa’s criminal justice system.

The commission was established after KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made explosive allegations during a media briefing on 6 July 2025, raising concerns about alleged corruption, criminality, political interference and the infiltration of criminal syndicates within the country’s criminal justice system.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the establishment of the commission on 13 July 2025, with Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga appointed as chairperson.

Public hearings officially began on 17 September 2025, with Mkhwanazi as the first witness.

Since then, the commission has heard testimony involving senior police officials, politicians, alleged criminal networks, tender processes and claims of interference in investigations.

The commission’s final report is expected to be submitted on 16 November 2026.

NINTH BODY FOUND IN DAWN PARK AS POLICE INVESTIGATE POSSIBLE LINK TO WOMEN’S DEATHS

Police have confirmed that a ninth body has been discovered in Dawn Park, Ekurhuleni, as investigations continue into a series of deaths involving women whose bodies have been found across the region since July.

The scene remains active, and police have not yet released the victim’s identity or the circumstances surrounding the death.

The latest discovery comes as authorities investigate the deaths of eight women whose bodies were recovered in different parts of Ekurhuleni, including Kempton Park, Olifantsfontein/Clayville, Rhodesfield and KwaThema.

Police have not confirmed that the Dawn Park case is connected to the previous cases. A specialised task team has been established to investigate the series of incidents.

One arrest has previously been made in connection with the first July case.

Families with missing relatives are urged to contact police to assist with identification.

TWO SUSPECTS ARRESTED, TWO FI****MS RECOVERED IN MOPANI

Two suspects aged 33 and 26 have been arrested following a joint operation by detectives from Giyani and Sekgosese in Limpopo’s Mopani District.

Police say the operation on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, followed information linking the suspects to a common robbery allegedly committed in the Sekgosese policing area on 13 September.

The operation in Olifantshoek Village led to the arrest of the 33-year-old suspect, with police recovering two fi****ms and four magazines. One of the fi****ms allegedly belongs to a robbery victim.

The second suspect, aged 26, was also arrested in connection with the robbery.

Both suspects are expected to appear before the Hlanganani Magistrate’s Court today, Thursday, 17 September, facing charges of common robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Police are continuing their investigation and are searching for three remaining suspects allegedly linked to the cases.

Former Police Minister Bheki Cele, SC, 23 members of the army were allegedly on the payroll of private businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

Cele said he began recognising some of the individuals and voices at the funeral where he was present alongside EFF leader Julius Malema.

Reflecting on the gathering, Cele said:

“There were more guns than flowers.”

NGIZWE MCHUNU AND EFF SET FOR CLASH IN INANDA

Ngizwe Mchunu is set to clash with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) after announcing a heritage festival in Inanda, Durban, on the same day the red berets are scheduled to hold their KwaZulu-Natal local government election manifesto event.

The move sets the stage for another public confrontation between Mchunu and the EFF, with the two events taking place in the same township on the same day.

Mchunu has previously organised events to coincide with EFF political programmes, including a cultural carnival held on the same day as the party’s 2024 manifesto launch in Durban.

The latest development comes as political parties prepare for the 2026 Local Government Elections.
