We really looooooove cars. ( is borderline obsessed - We’ve considered staging an intervention)

So, when a call came through to work with one of the most iconic automotive brands of all time, we nearly spilled our skinny matchas running to pick up the phone.

The money was tight (Tighter than Eduan’s skinny jeans in 2011) so we had to really scale back on crew and craft tables in favour of locations and landscapes that told the best story and showed the cars off in all their delicious glory.

The result was that the money really ended up on the screen in beautifully crafted, beautifully simple and truly iconic commercials.

There’s a lot we dunno.
But what we do know, is how to shoot a Hippo Commercial.
We’ve made many, many, many (maaaaaaaany) Hippo Ads over the years and this latest iteration is probably our favourite of the whole bloat. (“Bloat” is the collective noun for a group of Hippos and also describes the catering budget on this)
We had very little time and very many locations and of course, the unplayable dynamic of having an actual puppet in every scene.
But, teamwork made the dream work.

His first car commercial and for a brands thats proven to be tough both off and on-road . What starts as a simple errand evolves into an adventure, celebrating the joy of driving and the freedom to take the long way home.

The visual approach contrasts rugged off-road capability with premium on-road refinement.

Fifty years deserves more than a commercial. It deserves a story.

Made with brave people and an out of this world crew, creating work that celebrates 50 years of African bank needed to be treated with with dignity and respect.

This was Director Slick and Tom Marais' first collaboration creating a film that honours African Bank's legacy, built by Africans, for Africans.
