When I saw the video of that young boy beating up his grandmother, my heart ached. It hit close to home in many ways. A couple of months ago, I would have been so angry at him and hurled insults. But I have come to realise that, unless we surrender our lives to the Lord Jesus Christ, we all resemble that young man in one way or another. Our hearts are vile, and there is no good in any of us. As Romans 3:23 states, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." I am part of that "all," and so are you.
I condemn any form of abuse towards another human. God knows I particularly detest abuse towards women and children. However, I do not expect any good from someone who has not yielded their life to the Lordship of Jesus. The best thing I could do was to pray for that young man to be saved and come to the knowledge of Jesus Christ. Should we join the chant that he be handed over to the community for punishment? And then what? Would you rather he be beaten to death and go to hell, or pray for his salvation and hope that, through him, many like him might be saved?
