If you cannot name your grandmother's grandmother who told her story?
If your children grow up watching only stories from somewhere else whose children are they becoming?
Yesterday we sat with Mme Napo Masheane. Six hours. The grandmothers came up. Sesotho came up. The women whose names history books refused to print came up.
And I understood, more clearly than ever, why we are making this film.
For two hundred years, our stories have been told by other people. Kingdom in the Sky is the answer to that silence African stories, told by Africans, for everyone who has ever wondered where they actually come from.

This new day is an altar: to our ancestors who walked these valleys, to our children who will inherit our words, and to every African who dares to speak, write, and film themselves into existence.

It sits above the clouds. Its people ride horses across mountains that touch the sky. Its history is one of defiance, resilience, and a culture so rich it deserves to be witnessed by the world.

This is Lesotho. And we are telling its story.

Lesotho: Kingdom in the Sky is a six-part documentary series that will take audiences on an immersive journey through the Mountain Kingdom — from the legacy of King Moshoeshoe I, to the horsemen of the highlands, to the young visionaries shaping its future.

Sesotho is itself a documentary-worthy act. To center it is not a stylistic choice but a political and spiritual commitment. Politically, it pushes back against linguistic colonialism—against the centuries of schooling and urbanization that taught Basotho their language was less than. To place Sesotho at the heart of a cinematic work is to restore its dignity, to insist that it can carry complex ideas and intimate emotions with as much power as any colonial tongue. Spiritually, it honors what Sesotho holds that no translation can capture—the precise weight of botho, the cadence of praise poetry, the way certain truths only resonate when spoken in the language they were born in. For Basotho viewers, hearing their language treated with cinematic reverence is a kind of homecoming. For others, it offers an education in patience and respect—a reminder that not everything must be immediately accessible to be valuable. Sesotho in this documentary is not decoration. It is declaration. It is participation in survival.
