The Joburg Ballet’s Spring Season of Dance is drawing to a close this weekend with the third and final programme, First Light.

This mixed bill of classical and contemporary works beautifully blends tradition with bold new perspectives. It includes Raymonda Act 3, produced by former Joburg Ballet Principal Dancer Shannon Glover.

Concerto for Charlie, created by Veronica Paeper in the early 1980s for Capab Ballet, was part of a programme sponsored by the fragrance house Elizabeth Arden, with the title Charlie inspired by the perfume.

Mpho by Tumelo Lekana brings together ballet and African spirituality, enhanced by the incredible instrumentals of musician Peter Mpho Mothiba.

Nothing Twice by Chloe Blair introduces a striking contemporary edge to the stage, while Classics of Spain showcases ballets inspired by Spanish stories and settings, among them Don Quixote, Carmen, and Laurencia.

This performance was an incredible mix of artistry and technique, seamlessly weaving diverse themes of African and Spanish influence into a production already bursting with color, energy, and emotion. It was truly remarkable.

First Light is a definite must-see this weekend at the Joburg Theatre, with just three performances left: Friday, 10 October at 19h00; Saturday, 11 October at 14h00; and Sunday, 12 October at 14h00. Book your tickets through Webtickets:

It’s all that Jazz and so much more.

On Sunday night, I experienced a production that takes razzle-dazzle to dazzling new heights. Of course, I’m talking about none other than CHICAGO: The Musical.

This show is a masterclass in excellence and talent. The phenomenal cast delivered performances that left me absolutely spellbound.

CHICAGO is one of those shows that fully embodies all that makes Broadway and the West End great. It’s a universal tale of fame, fortune and all that jazz; one foot-tapping song after another, including “Razzle Dazzle”; plus, the sexiest, most sensational dancing and a sophisticated set the incorporates the live orchestra.

This show has brought cheering audiences to their feet all around the world. From Australia to Argentina and Spain to South Africa, more than 34 million people have seen CHICAGO, which has run for over 35 000 performances worldwide across 38 countries in more than 525 cities!

Leading local producer and promoter, Showtime Management has put together a brilliant cast, featuring principal performers Kiruna-Lind as chorus girl turned murderess Roxie Hart; Samantha Peo reprising the iconic role of Velma Kelly, the famous Vaudeville performer and fellow murderess; and Tankiso Mamabolo as the tough but savvy Matron Mama Morton.

The role of the slick, charismatic yet devious lawyer Billy Flynn is reprised by Jonathan Roxmouth who played this character in the New Zealand leg during the 2018/2019 CHICAGO World Tour. The role of Roxie’s simple, loving husband Amos Hart is played by Dean de Klerk and M.E. Marvey is the upbeat reporter, Mary Sunshine.

These alluring leads are supported by returning ensemble members from CHICAGO’s 2018/2019 season – Lesego van Niekerk, Jenna Robinson Child, Alexandra Girard, Ferdinand W Gernandt, Michael Fullard, Dirk Joubert and Hugo Madeleyn – as well as spicy newcomers Angelica Hattingh, Ashley Scott, Bronwyn Craddock, Leah Mari, Nicolette Fernandes, Nicholas Lai, André Maarman, Jonathan Raath, Kent Jeycocke and Nkosinathi Mazwai.

CHICAGO is a bold commentary on the pursuit of celebrity, and the extreme lengths people will go to for attention and success, no matter the cost – themes that are always trending!

This show is an absolute must-see. Now on at Montecasino’s Teatro until Sunday, 16 November 2025. Get your tickets before they’re sold out. Book now at www.ticketmaster.co.za.

Owing to strong adult themes and profanity, this production has a PG rating 10+. Parental guidance is advised.

Art in Motion...

Is something I always enjoy at an Open Day at the Joburg Ballet studios. It’s an opportunity to get a glimpse behind the scenes of a production and see what it takes to bring it all together.

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the Swan Lake Open Day. This production is extra special. For the first time in almost 30 years, South Africa’s two leading classical ballet companies, Joburg Ballet and Cape Town City Ballet, are joining forces to present this legendary ballet on a grand scale rarely seen in South Africa.

The morning began with a class led by Tracy Li, Cape Town City Ballet’s Artistic Manager, accompanied by pianist Tony Bentel.

After a short break, we watched a few rehearsals led by Tracy Li, Joburg Ballet’s Ballet Mistress Kim Viera, and acclaimed South African choreographer Veronica Paeper.

So, what can you look forward to when Swan Lake opens at the Joburg Theatre on 4 July?

⭐The incredibly talented dancers of Joburg Ballet and Cape Town City Ballet bringing this classic to life on stage
⭐Drama and emotion as the story unfolds with every turn and movement
⭐Swan Lake as you’ve never seen it before

Seeing the hard work that goes into putting a production like this together brings a new appreciation for what you witness on stage. It is going to be spectacular to watch as these artists leave their hearts on the stage and bring Swan Lake to life.

You don’t want to miss this. Swan Lake opens at the Joburg Theatre on Friday, 4 July, with nine additional performances running through to Sunday, 13 July. It then moves to the Cape Town International Convention Centre for four performances from 25 to 27 July.

Joburg Ballet and Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB) has announced principal casting for their joint production of Swan Lake in Johannesburg and Cape Town in July. The two companies have a line-up of established stars and exciting newcomers waiting in the wings to dance the leading roles in this most iconic of ballet classics.

🔹CTCB’S Hannah Ward and Jerome Barnes dance in Johannesburg on Sunday 6 July at 14h00 and Saturday 12 July at 19h00, and in Cape Town on Saturday 26 July at 19h00.
🔹For the closing performance of the Johannesburg season on Sunday 13 July at 14h00, CTCB has cast two dancers, Sasha Barnes and Isabella Redman, to share the role of Odette-Odile opposite Leusson Muniz as the Prince.

The role of the evil Von Rothbart will be shared by CTCB’s Axton Green and Joburg Ballet’s Gabriel Fernandes and David Maluleka.

The production of Swan Lake that the two companies are presenting was originally staged in Cape Town by French dancer Attilio Labis in 1971. Acclaimed SA choreographer Veronica Paeper will be responsible for restaging the ballet this year.

Close on 150 years after its first performance in Moscow in 1877, this saga of love and betrayal remains at the pinnacle of classical ballet, performed by ballet companies around the world with its leading role danced by the great ballerinas of every generation.

Oh, how I love theatre!

And yesterday, my weekend started off on a great note with Matilda The Musical JR. now on at the Peoples Theatre until 27 July 2025.

Matilda, based on the book by Roald Dahl, is the tale of a brilliant little girl with telekinetic powers. She has an unhappy life with her parents, and the show follows her in her attempts to turn her life around. Matilda’s parents believe she is a nuisance while she thinks they are only interested in watching the television.

Life at school isn't much better thanks to the monstrous headmistress Miss Trunchbull. The headmistress terrifies both students and teachers alike until one day Matilda discovers she has a very special power. She decides it's time to teach the grown-ups a lesson.

She also develops an unlikely friendship with her teacher Miss Honey, who admires Matilda’s intellect and almost magical abilities. As the plot progresses, the musical explores the bond between Matilda and Miss Honey, and Matilda’s desire for freedom.

Meet the cast:

⭐Luciano Zuppa brought Miss Trunchball to life in a spectacular way. From the clothes to the hair and make-up, this is one of my favourite roles that I have seen him in.
⭐Amelia Stephens delivered a graceful performance as Miss Honey, capturing the character’s warmth and quiet strength beautifully.
⭐Raymond Skinner never disappoints and in his role as Mr. Wormwood, we were laughing in our seats as his character plotted his next move.
⭐I was highly impressed with Jordan Rogers who plays Mrs. Wormwood. She effortlessly brings her character to life with flair and enthusiasm.
⭐The Escapologist played by Dumisa Dumisa brought razzle and dazzle to the stage with some impressive moves.
⭐Mrs Phelps, played by Motheo Thabane, was always ready to hear a story from Matilda and brought her character to life in a kind and special way.
⭐Matilda, played by Zia Kani was incredible. I was blown away by her professionalism and talent at such a young age. (The role of Matilda is alternated between Zia Kani, Peo-entle Pitso and Amira Nathan.)

I absolutely loved the show. It highlighted the importance of being kind, working hard and always believing in what is possible. It was fun, educational, and perfect for the whole family to enjoy this holiday season.

The show is on at the Peoples Theatre until 27 July 2025. Book your tickets through Webtickets:

New stores, fresh experiences and major upgrades continue mall’s growth trajectory

Fourways Mall continues to make exciting strides forward, building on the growth achieved in 2024 with a host of new store openings, lifestyle experiences and infrastructure enhancements. Over the past 12 months, the mall’s team has let 20 783 square metres of retail space and renewed leases for over 150 existing tenants. The leasing approach has been driven by a strategic focus on the evolving needs of its upwardly-mobile shopper base, resulting in the introduction of several on-trend, convenient and purposeful stores and leisure activities.

Almost a decade after its original departure, Spur, one of South Africa’s most recognisable and beloved restaurant franchises, has re-joined the Fourways Mall line-up, much to the delight of the Fourways community. The response to Spur’s return has exceeded expectations, reflecting the appreciation the mall’s shoppers have for home-grown, family-focused offerings.

Other vibrant new stores that have opened their doors include Huawei, Levisons, Mochachos, Pet Shop Science and proudly South African brand ZuluZenith. Financial service offerings African Bank and Travelex have moved to more convenient positions in the mall. Several new entrants are currently in shopfitting stage, each hand-picked to suit the Fourways shopper base.

Additionally, another long-anticipated feature is also coming to life. The airplane that was brought into the mall years ago is currently being refurbished and the surrounding area upgraded. Once open to the public, this will become the vibrant attraction it was always meant to be.

As part of its ambition to cement its position as a healthy lifestyle destination, Fourways Mall is actively broadening its entertainment and fitness options. The recently opened Match Padel features eight rooftop padel courts, complete with a café and sweeping views across the West Rand. Already proving popular among locals, this addition caters to the growing interest in accessible social sports. Other wellness-led additions include High Performance Training, a Hyrox-affiliated fitness studio, as well as Beauty on Tapp, The Fitz and Wellness Warehouse, bringing a strong health-focused bouquet to the centre.

Further entertainment and leisure options are also on the cards. Total Ninja, Urban Playground, Planet Fitness and Bloc 11 are all set to open soon, elevating the centre’s positioning as a multi-purpose shopping, fitness and leisure space. These new experiences will provide even more variety to multi-generational shoppers and super-serve the growing need for experiential offerings in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs.

Alongside these new attractions, work is underway on a large-scale solar energy system that will see an entire section of the roof decked in solar panels. This renewable energy drive supports a longer-term strategy to reduce the centre’s environmental impact and to ensure consistent energy supply.

Spending time at Fourways Mall has also become noticeably more enjoyable and convenient thanks to several recent upgrades. Improved signage, brighter lighting and a more intuitive wayfinding system have made navigation easier, while a well-lit, spacious drop-and-go zone now caters to e-hailing users. Added security and a revamped parking system have further streamlined the overall journey for visitors.

Fourways Mall’s leasing momentum, energy upgrades and the return of beloved tenants such as Spur highlight a strategy that is both commercially strong and locally relevant. With more stores opening and several large-format attractions on the way, the centre is well-positioned for continued growth as a leading retail and lifestyle destination in Johannesburg.

For regular updates on Fourways Mall, trading hours, and its stores, visit https://fourwdaysmall.com/ or follow the centre on social media Fourways Mall.
