South Africa isn’t just a country-it’s 11 languages deep.

Here are 7 powerful proverbs from our South African cultures- and the wisdom they carry

1. Zulu:

“Indlela ibuzwa kwabaphambili."

Translation: "The path is learned from those who have walked it before."

Meaning: Value the wisdom of elders and those with experience — they’ve walked the road you’re starting on.

2. Xhosa:

"Umntu ngumntu ngabantu."

Translation: "A person is a person through other people."

Meaning: Community and relationships are central to identity. This is the essence of Ubuntu.

3. Sotho:

"Bitso lebe ke seromo."

Translation: "A bad name is like a curse."

Meaning: A bad name can negatively affect the bearer, and therefore, the saying serves as a warning to parents to choose names carefully

4. Tswana:

"Ngwana yo o sa leleng o swela tharing."

Translation: "A child who does not cry will die on its mother’s back."

Meaning: If you don’t speak up or ask for help, your needs won’t be known or met.

6.Afrikaans:

“’n Appel val nie ver van die boom af nie”

Translation: An apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Meaning: This saying emphasises how children often resemble their parents, not just in appearance but in behaviour, too. It’s a great way to reflect on how family traits and habits are passed down.

"Vukhosi Mberha”
