The iPhone Duo looks good. Two thousand dollars good? I’d give Apple another generation.
The AirPods 5 are much easier to get excited about. Here’s my take on Apple’s announcements and what they mean for South African buyers.

Apple’s September 2026 announcements include iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Duo, new Watches and AirPods 5. Here’s what looks worth the money.

R75 extra to get it… the same afternoon?
We spotted two offers for an Epson ink pack on Takealot. R766 under “Fastest Delivery”. R691 under “Best Price”.
Both showed today, 1pm–7pm and same order deadline too. Yet the more expensive option was sitting first and selected by default.
Before you hit Add to Cart, check the delivery time on the cheaper offer. That fastest delivery label can be deceiving.

Takealot’s “Fastest Delivery” offer costs R75 more on an Epson ink listing, yet both options show the same arrival window. We unpack the buy box.

Xiaomi has just unveiled the 18 Fold, only days before Apple is expected to reveal its first foldable iPhone.
It packs a wider passport-style design, Leica cameras, a 6,000mAh battery and Xiaomi’s own 3nm Xring O3 chip.
The bad news for South Africans? You probably won’t be able to buy one officially.

HONOR just priced the Magic V6 at R39 999 and it is cheaper than the Galaxy Z Fold 8. We were at the Melrose Arch launch this afternoon, got hands-on with the Robot Phone that is not coming to South Africa, and did the contract maths nobody wants you to do.

HONOR Magic V6 pricing confirmed at R39 999, plus the Pad 20 and MagicBook X14. We also spent time with the Robot Phone, which is not coming to South Africa.

There's a decent chance you've been a Cell C customer for years without knowing it.
If you're on Capitec Connect, FNB Connect, Shoprite K'nect, Mr Price Mobile or Standard Bank Mobile, that SIM in your phone is running on Cell C's network. All of them are.
Cell C just published its first full year of results since listing on the JSE, and the headline numbers look good. 1.3 million subscribers added. Net debt cut by 64%. Data traffic up 47%.
But the interesting story isn't the retail business at all. It's the 5.7 million MVNO customers sitting on Cell C's network wearing somebody else's logo, and the 80% to 85% share it holds of that market.
The network that supposedly lost the retail war became the plumbing behind the brands that won it.
We've unpacked the results, including the one EBITDA number everyone is going to quote this week and the reason it needs an asterisk.

Cell C results for FY26 show 1.3 million new subscribers and net debt down 64%. The bigger story is the 5.7 million MVNO customers running on its network.

The PlayStation 5 Digital launched at R9,999 Six years ago. Now R14,499
That new smartphone now costs more than the last generation, with lower specs.
The R4,999 entry level laptop now sits at R7,999.
WHAT’S GOING ON with tech prices? And no, it’s not the Rand!

The AI memory shortage has doubled RAM prices and pushed the PS5 to R14,499. Here's why South African tech is getting more expensive.

Good news if you've been sitting on an unregistered solar system: Eskom has confirmed it won't fine you or cut your power for missing the 30 September deadline. Bad news: if you buy your electricity from City Power, the metro or Cape Town rather than from Eskom directly, that confirmation does not cover you at all. Cape Town still treats an unregistered system as an offence under its by-law. And the free registration window, worth up to about R10,000 including the smart meter, still closes on 30 September for everyone. Two different clocks, and only one of them stopped.

Eskom won't fine you for an unregistered solar system. Your municipality still might, and the free registration window closes on 30 September.
