We’re halfway through Week 2 of the GlobalGirl Media SA Photography Workshop, and the journey has been nothing short of transformative! Here’s a look at some of the highlights so far:

Skill-Building in Full Swing
From foundational techniques to more advanced storytelling tools, the participants have been sharpening their craft and discovering new ways to bring their creative visions to life.

Currently a Film & TV student, Tina is also a self-taught crocheter, braider and scrapbooker. Her creativity knows no bounds—she truly is a Jack of all trades!

Siyavuya Gqumehlo has a deep love for South Africa, the women that brought her up in the villages of Transkie. She is an artist and she loves storytelling. She enjoys her company so much that she doesn’t mind being alone to face herself. She believes that power is a struggle for all, that it brings intimidation, fear and occasionally blood shedding. She hopes that people will see it in her works through imagery.

Meet Nsika Mngomezulu a passionate and soulful storyteller doing her third year in Film and Television at the University of the Witwatersrand.

She is an aspiring cinematographer, screenwriter and editor. Trevor Stuurman once said, “opportunity dances with those who are already on the dance floor”, she uses that as something that directs her compass in every new endeavor, approaching everything with optimism and fun. She loves reading and everything that has to do with studying people, their history and culture.

She aspires to become a renowned photographer who captures and encapsulates the essence of human experiences, art, history and culture. Keamogetswe Motsoane is a 21-year-old filmmaker, photographer and poet. Her passions include scriptwriting, directing and cinematography. Fashion is also a huge aspect of who she is and creativity comes as second nature.

Her style of photography is film in both colour, and black&white. She captures stories that speak to her soul and express what it is she has gone through in the past while staying present. Skating is one of her hobbies and the quotes she lives by is “keep moving forward”.

Her favourite film is “The Photograph”, directed by Stella Meghie and the scene which speaks to her the most is where Christina Eames, who is the main character - mentions that; “Pictures take up more space than people, it’s the only way I could love”. Which is something she highly resonates with.

Meet Gontse Malaka, a Fine Artist who is motivated by her a flair for creativity and expressiveness. Excelling in subjects that involve any form of art, such as Literature and Visual art. GGMSA Crew 22/23: Introducing Keabetswe, a dedicated graduate with a BA in film and communication from the University of Johannesburg. Born and raised in the vibrant community of Soweto, Keabetswe's journey is deeply intertwined with her passion for documentary storytelling.

Driven by a desire to shed light on important social issues, Keabetswe advocates tirelessly for gender-based violence awareness and the rights of children. Through her documentaries, she amplifies the voices of the marginalized and strives to ignite meaningful conversations that lead to positive change.

Beyond her work in film, Keabetswe extends her impact to the local community by volunteering her time to train primary school children in netball. By empowering the next generation through sports, she fosters values of teamwork, leadership, and determination.
