JIAS Seminar | Sounds of Soweto: The Decolonial Rhythms and the Multicultural Roots of Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse’s Music

Join Professor Siphiwo Mahala, Acting Director of the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS), and legendary musician Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse for a seminar presented in collaboration with the UJ Library.

The seminar will explore the cultural influences that have shaped Mabuse’s distinctive sound and enduring musical journey. Situating Soweto as a dynamic cultural space where diverse traditions intersected and evolved under apartheid, the discussion will examine how his music draws on African rhythms, languages and performance traditions as expressions of identity, historical memory, cultural liberation and decolonial artistic practice.
