Frontline employees are the heartbeat of every business. Keeping them engaged and connected is essential for driving innovation, efficiency, and long-term success.

Today, Brainstorm Magazine, in partnership with Vodacom Business, is hosting an engaging and informative C-suite roundtable at The Country Club Johannesburg in Woodmead, themed, “Driving business success through an engaged, connected frontline.”

The session explores strategies to empower frontline employees, enhance operational efficiency, and leverage technology to build a high-performing, connected workforce.

As the digital landscape evolves, the future of work in Africa hinges on creating a connected workforce.

Attendees are also afforded an opportunity to share their use cases and insights, and network with industry peers.

In today’s digitally connected world, and where South Africa faces a sharp rise in cybercrimes, adopting SOC-as-a-Service is crucial for businesses of all sizes as it provides proactive, cost-effective, and around-the-clock protection against evolving threats.

To explore this further, ITWeb Brainstorm magazine, in partnership with Liquid C2, Cloudmania and Microsoft, hosted a C-suite roundtable discussion on 16 September at De Grendel Wine Estate and Restaurant in Cape Town.

The discussion was interactive, with one participant highlighting that their organisation is trying to decide whether or not to incorporate a SOC-as-a-Service into their environment.

The discussion touched on the issue of how expensive breaches are, with one participant estimating the cost of breaches to be between R3 million and R4 million, adding that costs depend on the size of the company and the extent of the breach.

Another issue raised was that while many clients are asking specific questions around cybersecurity, a deeper look often reveals broader challenges tied to their digital transformation journeys.

One participant, who works both in the healthcare sector and with early-stage venture capital businesses, raised concerns about the lack of dedicated security leadership in many organisations.

Brainstorm magazine, in partnership with Vodacom Business, hosted a C-suite roundtable discussion themed "Western Cape Public Sector Digital” on 14 August, 2025 at the One&Only in Cape Town.

This closed-door gathering brought together senior leaders for a bold and solutions-focused dialogue on how digital technology can enhance service delivery and empower citizens across the Western Cape.

Participants were asked to share some of their biggest digital transformation initiatives and the barriers to achieving them.

Connectivity emerged as a major pain point, with one participant highlighting that even though they have broadband in their facilities, the network quality in remote areas is a different story - it's just not robust enough to support their digitalisation efforts.

One key takeaway from the discussion was the crucial role of digital literacy and skills development. As one participant noted: "Providing the tools is just the starting point - the real challenge lies in ensuring they're used effectively."

To address misuse, one participant mentioned the need for what he dubbed a “digital upbringing” to improve awareness and knowledge about what not to do and how to use these tools ethically.

In this month's cover story, we focus on the pay gap that still exists in the corporate world between men and women.

We spoke to Gugu McLaren-Ushewokunze, head of economic inclusion and social transformation at the NBI, who says that even when education, experience and role are accounted for, a pay gap remains. “Men are hired for potential, whereas women are hired to prove themselves,” she says. “Men are frequently assessed on what they might achieve, while women have to prove what they’ve already done.”

We also have an interesting piece on the gender pay gap bot launched in the UK in 2022, with the aim of drawing attention to discrepancies in pay between women and men. It makes for a very insightful read.

Also featured in this edition:

* Dominique Gawlowski, managing director at FreeLives and festival director at Playtopia, walks us through her journey of how she ended up in the gaming industry.

*Andries Basson, chief operations executive at Nu-Metro, speaks about their exciting 4DX theatres, which promises to be a multi-sensory, motion experience, where the soundtrack is connected to smell, lights, and wind effects, among others.

*Liesel Engelbrecht, Standard Bank’s CIO for data engineering and AI, is a formidable woman who shares her own corporate journey, with its ups and downs. “If I was a man, I'd be 'the man', but because I'm a woman, I'm too assertive, I suppose.”

*Zanele Matome is the CEO and founder of a local healthcare startup, Welo Health, which she describes as an "Uber for healthcare." Welo lowers medical costs by linking companies with nurses and doctors that offer home care.

As the world modernises, the mining industry must also adapt to stay relevant and competitive. By embracing new technologies and innovative practices, mining can improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability, ultimately driving long-term success.

Brainstorm magazine, in partnership with First Distribution and Huawei Enterprise South Africa, hosted a C-suite roundtable discussion, "Towards Intelligent Mining”, on 15 May 2025, at Marble restaurant, in Rosebank, Johannesburg.

The discussion focused on how connectivity serves as a keystone in the journey to becoming an intelligent mine, enabling real-time analytics and autonomous operations through fast, reliable, and redundant communication infrastructure.

One participant said the South African mining industry lags significantly behind in technological advancements and digitalisation, particularly in older mines, adding that it's imperative to prioritise the integration of new technologies to enhance safety and drive progress.

An emphasis on the importance of responsible modernisation and technology adoption was highlighted by another participant, cautioning that people often assume technology solutions will magically fix all problems without understanding their practical implications for those on the ground.

Another participant pointed out that even closed mines can be revived by embracing new technologies like underground autonomous drones, offering a potential second chance for dormant operations.

Participant shared challenges and success stories on their intelligent mining journeys. One roundtable attendee shared one of their successful autonomous drilling trials. She noted that being an early adopter of digital mining gave them a significant advantage. However, they struggled to keep other equipment in sync with the autonomous drone's efficiency, citing bottlenecks in excavation and fragmentation processing. She emphasised that technology is advancing rapidly, creating the challenge of keeping up with integration and optimisation.
