On August 9, 2017, the legendary Lady Liuwa, the lone lioness who roamed Zambiaâs Liuwa Plain National Park, died of natural causes just one day before World Lion Day. Her life, marked by resilience and survival, inspired millions and became a symbol of hope for lion conservation.
Poaching wiped out Lions from Liuwa Plain in the 1990s, leaving Lady Liuwa as the sole survivor. For years, she wandered the plains alone, even seeking companionship from humans. Her remarkable journey was immortalized in one of the most moving wildlife films ever.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of African Parks and partners, Lady Liuwa was eventually united with her kind. Though she could not have cubs, she played a vital role in nurturing a growing pride, leaving behind a legacy of survival and community.
Lady Liuwaâs incredible story reminds us of the power of conservation and collaboration. Her memory lives on in Liuwa Plainâs thriving lion prideâa testament to whatâs possible when we work together to protect wildlife.
