EVATON - Serious allegations of assault and destruction of evidence at Evaton SAPS have been escalated to the Gauteng SAPS Provincial office following an incident that allegedly occurred this morning, 31 August 2026.
The allegations are linked to the disappearance of Siyabonga Khumalo, whose case was opened at Evaton SAPS.
According to information received by KHD MEDIA from the family, the missing person's cousin went to Evaton SAPS today to follow up on the disappearance. It is alleged that during the follow-up, he was assaulted at the police station.
The family further alleges that Siyabonga Khumalo was allegedly given away to settle a drug debt, and that a police officer attached to Beverly Hills, Evaton, is allegedly involved in his disappearance.
In a more serious allegation, the family claims that a personnel member from Mafatsane at Evaton SAPS allegedly requested the cousin's cellphone, which allegedly contains evidence linked to the disappearance, and allegedly smashed it to destroy evidence and protect the implicated officer.
It is further alleged that after the phone was allegedly smashed, the same personnel member insisted on taking the phone for repair, an offer which the family allegedly refused.
KHD MEDIA, in line with ethical journalism, sent a formal urgent media enquiry to the Gauteng SAPS Provincial Media Centre at 16h00 today. In the enquiry, KHD MEDIA requested comment on whether SAPS is aware of the incident; what steps are being taken to investigate the alleged assault and destruction of evidence; whether IPID has been notified; the status of the Siyabonga Khumalo disappearance case; and SAPS's response to the allegation involving a police officer.
At 19:41 this evening, Gauteng SAPS Provincial Spokesperson, Colonel Sebeko, responded to KHD MEDIA via WhatsApp. The spokesperson requested case numbers to verify the incidents and stated: "May I please give you the response tomorrow because I need to verify the information for me to provide accurate information."
KHD MEDIA has since requested the family to urgently provide the case number for the disappearance of Siyabonga Khumalo and the case number or OB number for today's alleged assault and malicious property damage. The family has been advised to preserve the alleged damaged cellphone as evidence and not to hand it over for repairs, and to open a formal case of assault and malicious damage to property at an alternative station if a case has not yet been opened at Evaton SAPS.
SAPS has indicated that a verified official response will be provided tomorrow, 01 September 2026.
KHD MEDIA is protecting the identities of the complainants and all implicated parties pending the outcome of the SAPS verification and IPID process. All allegations are published as allegations received from the family.
KHD MEDIA will publish a follow-up article once the official SAPS response and case numbers are received.
Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Siyabonga Khumalo is requested to contact Evaton SAPS or KHD MEDIA via inbox.
