The ad industry is in big s**t. At least in South Africa it is.

Creative is in trouble, but why? And more importantly how do we fix it?
The quality of ideas that are put on the review table are mediocre at best. Creative people tend to share ideas they believe will get approved by client not by what will make the brand famous. Most creatives these days aren’t motivated by creating something new, something that becomes a reference point for everything that comes after, something that will redefine the category. Creative people aren’t trained as well as they used to be either. Dare I say it, Creative Directors too. And even some ECDs. Nobody says “No. It’s not good enough” anymore. I grew up on rejection. It’s the thing that taught me where the bar is. That’s where the learning lies, where the growing happens and where magic crystallises. Creatives, you need to try harder!

Then there are clients. Esteemed clients, you’re trying too hard. You’re making too many demands on one brief, asking for too much with too little money or time, making too many creative decisions, interfering a little too much in the process, over-analysing everything and intellectualising too much. You have too many decision-makers in your process, too much self-doubt and even more doubt when it comes to your agencies. And the result is crap creative work that rubs off onto your brands. Clients, you’re trying too hard.

So how do we fix it? We need to go back to go forward. We need to go back to studios getting trained well, to saying “no” more to mediocrity. We need to go back to playing and having fun. And we need to go back to clients trusting that creative people are better creatives than they are. We need PERMISSION TO FAIL again.

The science of advertising has fooled everyone into believing that creativity can be engineered. No it can’t. Creativity will always be made of magic, of the inexplicable, the unpredictable. It needs a chance to fail if it has any chance of succeeding. That is the uncomfortable truth.
So please, give yourselves permission to fail. If you do, we can all succeed again.
