President Isaias Afwerki and President El-Sisi agree to support the Sudanese army, enhance Red Sea security, and cooperate on Somalia
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and his Eritrean counterpart Isaias Afwerki discussed developments in Sudan, Somalia, and the Red Sea during their meeting in Cairo today, affirming the two countries’ aligned views on regional issues of mutual concern.
According to a statement from the Egyptian presidency, the two leaders emphasized the need to support Sudan’s national institutions, particularly its armed forces, and to reject any attempts to establish parallel entities, while commending Egypt’s efforts within the Quartet mechanism to end the conflict and alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.
Regarding the situation in Somalia, both presidents reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to the 2024 Asmara Trilateral Summit Declaration, which called for respect for Somalia’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, and for strengthening the capacities of Somali state institutions to address internal and external challenges.
The meeting also addressed Red Sea security, with both sides stressing the importance of enhancing cooperation among Arab and African littoral states to safeguard navigation and promote stability in this vital maritime corridor.
On the bilateral level, President El-Sisi welcomed President Afwerki’s visit and participation in the Grand Egyptian Museum inauguration, reaffirming Egypt’s keenness to strengthen its longstanding strategic partnership with Eritrea.
For his part, President Afwerki expressed his deep appreciation for Egypt’s leadership role in promoting stability and development in the Horn of Africa and East Africa, and voiced his desire to expand bilateral cooperation and enhance regional and international coordination.
