An artist messaged me yesterday asking if I could mix and master his song.
I asked a simple question: “Are you willing to pay, or do you want it done for free?”

He replied,
“Please sir, I don’t have anything on me right now… I DM’d you because I’ve been following your posts.”

So I asked him what he does for a living.
He said, “I’m a student and also a painter.”

Then I asked,
“Do you paint for free, or do people pay you for your work?”

He said he’s still an apprentice.

So I asked again,
“When you finish your apprenticeship, do you expect people to pay you? Or will you paint for free?”

He eventually said, “To get paid.”

And that’s where the point becomes clear.

A lot of people want what they wouldn’t accept.
If you believe you deserve to be paid for your own craft, why expect someone else to work for free?

Music production is not a charity.
It’s a skill, a service, and a business.

What you would not like someone to do to you, don’t do it to others.

Respect people’s craft the same way you want yours to be respected.
