Behind the Making of Don't Call Me Jovis. 🔌🎞🎥

The streets are buzzing as one of the culture’s freshest fashion brands gears up to drop its debut short film, Don’t Call Me Jovis. Set to premiere on Friday, 29th November at 11:30 AM, this visual banger is distributed by none other than Mzansihood Tales, a platform known for spotlighting authentic, homegrown narratives.

This isn’t just a film; it’s a vibe. Don’t Call Me Jovis promises to take viewers on a journey through the gritty, raw, and unapologetically real moments that shape the brand’s identity. But that’s not all—leading up to the premiere, they’re teasing us with behind-the-scenes clips, the kind of unfiltered gold that didn’t make the final cut but still carries the heartbeat of the project.

In a space where street culture meets high art, Don’t Call Me Jovis stands as a testament to the power of storytelling through fashion. Stay locked in—this drop is set to shake the culture.

Culture & Community over Caps & Couture.

Our friends at Tall Boys Society and Mzansihood Tales are serving up a truly eclectic visual feast with their short documentary, Don't Call Me Jovis.

Co-founder of Tall Boys Society explains the title: “The title Don't Call Me Jovis is a metaphor reminding us not to judge a book by its cover. We're more than just tall guys selling headwear and fan merchandise—we're active contributors to the creative culture, shaping it with purpose and passion.” Thami Darklass, President of Merchandise & Inventory, added, “Asizona iy’bhamu zey’nyoni!”

The documentary delves into the brothers' creative background, their merchandise, and their contributions to the creative culture in Katlehong. The doccie subtly previews some ideas that the collective will be launching in 2025 without saying a word.

Collaboration, the core value of Tall Boys Society, shines brightly in this project. They enlisted their talented creative circle to bring the vision to life, with Thabang Selepe operating the cameras, Thami Darklass serving as the Director of Photography (DOP), Nkanyezi Mbatha handling the lighting, Madoda Valashiya overseeing post-production, and Katlehong's super producer Skero11 creating the film score.

Don't Call Me Jovis premieres on Friday, November 29th via the Mzansihood Tales YouTube channel. In Thami Darklass' words: “It's going to be a hot summer.” And we’re ready to witness it! 💥🔥🔥🌪

This is more than a hood story – it’s a celebration of flamboyant Black Boys from the ghetto and their superpowers. These alchemists and neighborhood champions exemplify what the Kasie can produce. We as Black Boys are BEAUTIFUL and VICTORIOUS, and we embrace it. The revolution is being documented, by fire, by force.

🎬 What We Became: Combo Dojo - Celebrating Four Years of Kasi Greatness! 🎬
Today, we celebrate a milestone that resonates deeply within Jo’burg and the streets of Katlehong. Four years ago, HIPP Daily Media Works dropped its groundbreaking documentary, What We Became: COMBO DOJO. Produced and written by Lungelo Zulu, the founder and creative director of HIPP Daily Media Works, this documentary captured the essence of a dynamic creative collective that redefined street culture.

Combo Dojo, hailing from the vibrant Mavimbela section of Katlehong, consists of four powerhouses: one visual artist and three musicians. Together, they’ve mastered the art of blending music and street fashion, becoming icons in their own right. The 30-minute film is more than just a profile; it’s a deep dive into the notion of social identity and the cultural impact of these incredible artists.

The film showcases their journey, highlighting how their background and environment shaped their unique perspectives and artistic expressions. It's a celebration of young Black artists who are not just surviving but thriving and making a significant impact on their communities.

Shot in August 2020, What We Became: Combo Dojo takes us inside the creative minds of these artists. We see them in their element, their studio – a sanctuary of creativity and collaboration. Conversations flow about social identity, the power of art in marginalized communities, and the crucial role of collaboration.

Produced by HIPP Daily Media Works with technical support from Habitat61, and featuring the cinematographic talents of Lindokuhle Shandu, Thami Darklass, and editor Madoda Valashiya of King Doda Digital Media, this documentary is a testament to the power of storytelling. Appearances by affiliates like Tandaza Simama and Jackie Mtsogo add depth and authenticity, making this a true reflection of kasi life.

What We Became: Combo Dojo premiered on August 5, 2021, exactly one year after the first interviews. It was accompanied by a photo essay curated by me, giving fans a behind-the-scenes look into the making of this iconic documentary. The film embarked on a screening tour, spreading its message far and wide.

As we celebrate four years since its release, we honor the journey of Combo Dojo and the lasting impact of this documentary. Follow HIPP Daily Media Works and Combo Dojo on all social media platforms.
