African Dawn Outfitter - Northern Operations Africa

Based out of Miami, Florida (USA), Northern Operations Africa is an all-inclusive African hunting outfitter specializing in bongo, Lord Derby’s eland, and mountain nyala.

Founded in 2009 by Dave and Maria Rademeyer, and built on over a decade of experience in Northern Africa, they knew exactly which areas offered the best hunting — and what it took to operate successfully.

Over the last 11 years, more than 180 successful safaris have been completed across CAR, Cameroon, and Ethiopia. Their exceptional team of professional hunters, together with trusted local partners, ensures a seamless and unforgettable experience from the very first conversation — until your trophies arrive safely at your taxidermist.

It’s no surprise that 95% of their clients return to hunt again.
That kind of loyalty says it all.

Giant (Lord Derby’s) Eland — Tragelaphus (Taurotragus) derbianus

The giant eland is a truly majestic antelope: large and ox-like, with a distinctive shoulder hump and a heavy dewlap edged by a dark mane — most pronounced in bulls. Their ears are noticeably large and the horns massively built, the spiral more open than in other elands. Coat colour ranges from reddish-brown to chestnut with 12–15 narrow white vertical stripes on each side; older animals show greying of the neck and forequarters and a charcoal-black nose bridge. You’ll often spot a pale chevron between the eyes. The species earned the name “Lord Derby’s eland” after Edward Smith-Stanley, 13th Earl of Derby, who shipped the first live specimens to England in the 1800s.

Habitat: woodland savanna — the transitional belt between tropical forest and the Sahel — typically in Isoberlinia, Terminalia–Combretum and Afzelia dominated woodlands.

RIFLES & AMMUNITION (recommended)
• Suggested calibre: .338 – .375
• Bullet: expanding bullet designed for pe*******on
• Sights: medium-range variable scope
• Hunting conditions: expect medium-range shots in open woodland

A magnificent quarry that demands respect — both for its power and for the skill needed to hunt ethically and effectively.

🪶 A Wingshooting Primer ✍️ By Ken Bailey

For many hunters, Africa’s allure lies in its plains game and the Big Five. But there’s another side to safari that’s equally thrilling, yet often overlooked—the wingshooting opportunities.

From the crafty guinea fowl that flush in a noisy burst of wings, to the iconic grey-winged partridge of the Eastern Cape, to vast flocks of doves, pigeons, ducks, and geese—southern Africa is unmatched in its abundance and diversity of gamebirds. Even the revered sandgrouse, celebrated in classic hunting literature, offers a challenge that keeps wingshooters coming back season after season.
Whether you’re an avid bird hunter looking for new experiences or a big-game hunter curious about adding wingshooting to your next safari, this article lays out the birds, the gear, and what makes this pursuit so rewarding.

Africa’s Greatest Hunting Magazine

Richard Lendrum (Publisher) Richard was born in Zambia in 1966, grew up in Zimbabwe, and has lived in South Africa for the last 22 years. Schooled in Bulawayo and then doing a Marketing BComm in South Africa, he was privileged to grow up close to nature, in a family that spent much time in the Matopo hills outside Bulawayo studying and collecting birds. With a passion for wildlife, Richard realized the role that tourism – and especially hunting tourism – plays in conserving wildlife, as well as in habitat conservation, and wanted to be part of that. Richard is an entrepreneur and conservationist at heart. Alongside the marketing and media business Richard founded 21 years ago, African Hunting Gazette contributes to his mission – promoting hunting in Africa. His vision for African Hunting Gazette is to help grow (double) the number of international hunters to Africa to 20,000. The space, game and inherent interest in Africa is there. He plans on developing a cohesive group of outfitters across the continent working in a cooperative, yet competitive environment, all with one objective - to promote hunting for the benefit of the continent of Africa.
