African Dawn Outfitter - Mafube Safaris

Mafube — meaning “the dawning of a new day” in Sesotho — is where the African adventure begins.

Founded by Cloete Hepburn, Mafube Safaris is the result of a passion passed down from father to son. Cloete grew up hunting in the Free State and turned that lifelong love for the outdoors into a career back in 2001. Since then, he's been sharing the best of South Africa’s hunting traditions with guests from all over the world.

Based at UITZIGHT Private Game Reserve & Lodge, Mafube Safaris operates across 200,000 acres of prime hunting ground, with a wide variety of game species roaming freely in their natural habitat. Just over 300km from OR Tambo International Airport, it’s remote enough to feel wild, but close enough to get here without hassle.

If you're looking for an authentic African hunting experience grounded in tradition, respect, and proper safari values — Mafube is where it starts.

Game Animals of Africa: Common (Grey) Duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia)

Small but resilient, the Common Duiker is a true survivor of Africa’s diverse landscapes. Unlike its forest cousins, it carries a straight back and a distinctive narrow crest of hair atop its head. Its coat varies from reddish-brown to grey, adapting to everything from coastal plains to the alpine zones of East Africa.

💡 Did you know? Only rams – and rarely ewes – bear the sharp, ringed horns that make this species instantly recognizable.

📍 Habitat: Savanna woodland, thickets, open bush country

🔫 Hunting Notes:
• Calibre: .224–.243
• Bullet: Expanding
• Sights: Medium-range variable scope
• Conditions: Medium-range shots in mixed cover

A versatile species in both habitat and hunting experience. Would this be on your list for your next safari?

❄️ The Snow Buff – A Hunt Like No Other ❄️

High in the Karoo mountains, with thin air biting our lungs and snow crunching underfoot, we set out on a stalk that would push every limit. The target? A lone, battle-hardened Cape buffalo bull. The challenge? Closing the distance with nothing but a revolver in hand.
What unfolded next was a heart-pounding dance of patience, precision, and raw adrenaline – a hunt in conditions few will ever experience.

What happens when an Aussie buffalo guide gets the call for a last-minute Cape buffalo and leopard hunt in Tanzania’s legendary Selous Game Reserve?

Game Animals of Africa: Black-fronted Duiker
Cephalophus nigrifrons

With its rich reddish coat, dark limbs, and signature black blaze stretching from nose to crest, the Black-fronted Duiker is one of the forest’s more striking and elusive antelopes. This coarse-haired beauty thrives in the dense, swampy forests and montane regions of East Africa – often found along streams or deep in tropical forest belts.

A rare and protected subspecies, the Rwenzori duiker (C. n. rubidus), is restricted to the misty alpine heights of Uganda’s Rwenzori Mountains – aptly named the Mountains of the Moon. This high-altitude dweller is now considered a separate species and cannot be legally hunted.

🎯 Hunting Notes

Expect close-range encounters in thick vegetation.

🔸 Calibre: Shotgun or light centrefire (up to .243)
🔸 Ammunition: Buckshot or expanding bullet
🔸 Sights: Open, red-dot, or low-magnification scope
An unforgettable challenge for the forest hunter—stealth, patience, and sharp eyes are a must.

🇳🇦 A Hunt Unlike Any Other.
When a call came from Namibia with an unexpected request – hunt a problem elephant to help feed drought-stricken villages – Lavon Winkler said yes.

What followed was a journey through unforgiving terrain, emotional decisions, and a moment of silent gratitude as one elephant fed thousands.

💡 "I did not come here to hunt an elephant. I came here from the United States to help you feed your people."

📖 This is not your typical hunting story.

🦓 Bitten by the Safari Bug… Again! 🦓

There’s something magical about receiving your trophies from Africa — it’s like unwrapping memories. This morning, six new arrivals from my third hunt at Bergzicht Game Lodge in Namibia brought a smile to my face… and reminded me just how far this journey has taken me.
From wildlife photography in Kenya to pulling the trigger on my first red hartebeest, from watching bat-eared foxes dart into the bush to sharing fireside stories over grilled wildebeest tenderloins — Africa has slowly transformed me.
Now, at 74, the walls of our home are full… but the stories just keep growing.

💬 “I laid my hand on his forehead, a gesture of respect for the life that I had just taken…”

📖 This is more than a hunting tale — it's a lifetime of memories, ethics, passion, and photography wrapped into one unforgettable journey.

Africa’s Greatest Hunting Magazine

Richard Lendrum (Publisher) Richard was born in Zambia in 1966, grew up in Zimbabwe, and has lived in South Africa for the last 22 years. Schooled in Bulawayo and then doing a Marketing BComm in South Africa, he was privileged to grow up close to nature, in a family that spent much time in the Matopo hills outside Bulawayo studying and collecting birds. With a passion for wildlife, Richard realized the role that tourism – and especially hunting tourism – plays in conserving wildlife, as well as in habitat conservation, and wanted to be part of that. Richard is an entrepreneur and conservationist at heart. Alongside the marketing and media business Richard founded 21 years ago, African Hunting Gazette contributes to his mission – promoting hunting in Africa. His vision for African Hunting Gazette is to help grow (double) the number of international hunters to Africa to 20,000. The space, game and inherent interest in Africa is there. He plans on developing a cohesive group of outfitters across the continent working in a cooperative, yet competitive environment, all with one objective - to promote hunting for the benefit of the continent of Africa.
