A Buffalo Double

In the remote north of Uganda, near the South Sudan border, fire is not destruction — it is renewal. And in its wake, three old Dagga Boys move through the scorched grass, alone, dangerous, and unpredictable.

What follows is a rare Nile buffalo hunt found nowhere else in Africa: controlled fire, expert trackers, a high-risk stalk, and a moment that will be remembered forever in hunting history.

This is not just a hunt — it’s a powerful reminder of ethical hunting as a cornerstone of conservation.

Game Animals of Africa – Thomson’s Gazelle (Eudorcas thomsoni)

The lively little “Tommy” is one of Africa’s most abundant and well-known gazelles. Its coat ranges from pale yellowish-fawn to reddish-fawn on the upperparts, sharply divided from the clean white underparts by a bold, broad black lateral stripe. A distinct white ring surrounds the eye, and the short black-haired tail is constantly flicking—a trademark feature in the open savanna.

Rams carry long, strongly ringed horns that curve slightly inward near the tips, while ewes have shorter, more slender horns that are often deformed. The Mongalla race (E. t. albonotata), recently recognised as a full species, shows extended white markings on the forehead and more sharply inward-turning horns.

Habitats: Open grassland savanna

Rifles & Ammo: Calibres from .224 to .257 with expanding bullets are ideal. Hunters can expect medium-range shots in open country with a variable scope.
A true icon of Africa’s grasslands!

“It’s where the turacos sing.”

Deep in the Congolese equatorial forest, days blur into sweat, rain, bloodied hands, and sheer exhaustion. No roads. No shortcuts. Just trackers, dogs, superstition, and a single bongo bull that refuses to give in.

What began as a “normal” hunt became a brutal 16-hour test of endurance, resolve, and brotherhood—through flooded swamps, biting ants, charging gorillas, and jungle so dense it fought back at every step.

This is not a story about an easy trophy.
It’s a story about tenacity, suffering, respect for the forest—and a place few hunters will ever reach.

Africa’s Greatest Hunting Magazine

Richard Lendrum (Publisher) Richard was born in Zambia in 1966, grew up in Zimbabwe, and has lived in South Africa for the last 22 years. Schooled in Bulawayo and then doing a Marketing BComm in South Africa, he was privileged to grow up close to nature, in a family that spent much time in the Matopo hills outside Bulawayo studying and collecting birds. With a passion for wildlife, Richard realized the role that tourism – and especially hunting tourism – plays in conserving wildlife, as well as in habitat conservation, and wanted to be part of that. Richard is an entrepreneur and conservationist at heart. Alongside the marketing and media business Richard founded 21 years ago, African Hunting Gazette contributes to his mission – promoting hunting in Africa. His vision for African Hunting Gazette is to help grow (double) the number of international hunters to Africa to 20,000. The space, game and inherent interest in Africa is there. He plans on developing a cohesive group of outfitters across the continent working in a cooperative, yet competitive environment, all with one objective - to promote hunting for the benefit of the continent of Africa.
