CAN CHRISTIANS WHO HAVE SINNED REPEATEDLY BE FORGIVEN & EXPERIENCE THE JOY OF SALVATION AGAIN?!?
š We shall closely look at HEBREWS 10:26ā31 in the NKJV and NIV Versions of the Bible to dive into the hermeneutics and exegesis of this complex text;
HEBREWS 10ā¬:ā26ā¬-ā27ā¬, ā29⬠ā(NKJVā¬ā¬)
āFor if we SIN WILLFULLY after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?ā
Hebrews⬠ā10ā¬:ā26ā¬-ā27⬠āNIVā¬ā¬
āIf we DELIBERATELY keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.ā
āāHebrews⬠ā10ā¬:ā26ā¬-ā27⬠āNIVā¬ā¬
āā Misunderstanding to Avoid:
This passage does not condemn believers who struggle with sin and seek Godās help to overcome. It refers to:
ā¢Deliberate, willful, unrepentant rebellion, not weakness or repeated struggle.
ā¢People who reject Christās sacrifice and choose a path of apostasy, not those crying out for mercy.
š Key Greek Terms:
ā¢āDeliberatelyā ā hekousiÅs: willfully, knowingly, without remorse.
ā¢āTrample underfootā ā implies contempt for Christās sacrifice, not confession of failure.
So, the verse is not a warning for strugglers, but for rebels who reject the blood of Christ, mock grace, and turn back to unbelief.
ā
THERE IS HOPE ā Even for Repeated Failures
š¹ 1. Godās Mercy Endures Forever
āThe steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an endā¦ā (Lamentations 3:22ā23)
The Mercy of God endures forever for those who never stop seeking Him in spite of repeated failures!
Micah⬠ā7ā¬:ā18ā¬-ā19⬠āNLTā¬ā¬
āThere is no God like you, who pardons the guilt of the remnant, overlooking the sins of his special people? You will not stay angry with your people forever, because you delight in showing unfailing love. Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean!ā
āIt therefore means that even if a
Christian falls 70 times, God is willing to forgive as long as they repent and keep pressing toward Himā
Proverbs⬠ā24ā¬:ā16⬠āNIVā¬ā¬
āFor though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.ā
š¹ 2. God Knows Our Context and Weakness
āHe knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust.ā (Psalm 103:14)
Many believers in poverty-stricken communities may fall into:
⢠Lying out of fear
ā¢. Lying to avoid rejection
⢠Stealing for survival
⢠Immoral compromises due to economic pressure etc.
God is not excusing sin, but He is compassionate toward those trapped by oppression and sincerely seeking to escape.
š¹ 3. Grace Is Not for the Perfect, but the Humble
God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.ā (James 4:6)
Those who fall, confess, weep, and seek help are still under Godās grace.
Grace teaches and empowers (Titus 2:11ā12), not just forgives.
š¹ 4. The Role of the Church: Restore, Donāt Reject
If someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gentlyā¦ā (Galatians 6:1)
Our job as Pastors and leaders
is to:
ā¢Counsel, not condemn.
⢠Strengthen, not shame.
⢠Provide discipleship, prayer,
and economic empowerment, NOT JUST REBUKE!!
HOW TO ASSIST CHRISTIANS WHO STRUGGLE WITH SIN?
1. Create Safe Counseling Spaces
ā¢Many members sin out of emotional torment and financial distress.
ā¢Provide godly, non-judgmental counseling.
ā¢Assure them that God still loves them and ready to fully forgive and restore though they have messed us.
ā¢Reach out to them with love and compassion and never judging.
2. Teach Grace AND Discipleship
ā¢BALANCE : God forgives, but also transforms.
ā¢Offer hope that sanctification is progressive and never instantaneous- (Philippians 1:6).
3-Offer Deliverance and Prayer because many are also in demonic cycles of sin and shame. Create sessions for healing, deliverance, and inner renewal.
4-Mentorship and Accountability
ā¢Pair struggling believers with mature Christians for weekly encouragement.
ā¢Help them build daily spiritual disciplines (Word, prayer, fasting).
š VICTORY DECLARATION FOR STRUGGLING BELIEVERS:
Though I have fallen, I will rise again.
Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light.
The blood of Jesus has not lost its power.
I am not rejected, I am being restored.
I am not condemned, I am being cleansed.
The grace of God is working in me to overcome every sin and shame!ā
