A multidisciplinary Inter Provincial Cross Border operation comprising of the Northern Cape, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Free State provinces successfully disrupted the trade and distribution of illicit ci******es in and around Colesberg on Wednesday, 20 August 2025.

Members of Colesberg SAPS, Kuyasa SAPS, Crime Intelligence and SARS Customs acted on intelligence and approached a general dealer in Kerk Street, Colesberg, where illicit cigarette trading was suspected.

Search warrants were obtained and executed, resulting in the seizure of counterfeit ci******es valued at approximately R370 000.

A suspicious truck parked next to the store was also searched. Police discovered a further consignment of counterfeit ci******es valued at approximately R2,5 million, which was seized as well as the truck.

The operation continued at a filling station in Station Road, Colesberg, where additional counterfeit ci******es worth an estimated R590 000 were confiscated.

The total estimated value of the seized ci******es and the truck stands at R7,5 million.

The owners were issued a seven-day notice to provide original documentation for the goods.

Tiger Brands has recalled its Benny beef- and chicken-flavoured stock cubes due to inaccurate labelling on the packs. The cubes in question have been on sale since 2023.

The company, which is already locked in a legal battle over the 2017 listeriosis outbreak, which claimed over 200 lives and infected more than a thousand people, said it decided to initiate the precautionary recall after consultation with the National Consumer Commission.

The Britstown Regional Court sentenced 46-year-old Nathan Olifant for the brutal murders of his partner, Patricia Olifant (42), and stepson, Romanio Welkom (21), which occurred in Britstown on Friday, 2 June 2023.

Court proceedings revealed that both victims were discovered inside their home with multiple head wounds inflicted by the accused using an axe.

Following the incident, the accused attempted to take his own life but was prevented from doing so by his brother-in-law and community members, who subsequently handed him over to the police.

Popular podcaster and Kaya 959 breakfast show host Sol Phenduka has been suspended from the station with immediate effect on Wednesday, 20 August.
In a shock announcement, Kaya 959 cited an ongoing internal process.

The station released the bombshell statement just hours after the podcaster had completed his regular on-air shift, leaving listeners and industry insiders stunned by the sudden development.

"Kaya 959 confirms that presenter Sol Phenduka has been placed on suspension with immediate effect. This step has been taken pending the outcome of an internal process currently under way," the station's official statement read.

Parliament's police portfolio committee chairperson lan Cameron and his team fell victim to an attempted hijacking in Philippi, Cape Town, on Tuesday afternoon.

He said one of his team members had to be hospitalised following the incident; however, he and the rest of the team managed to escape unharmed.
Cameron told News24 that he and his team had wrapped up an "unannounced visit" at the Philippi police training academy, and when they left the area to drop off a colleague at the Cape Town International Airport, their vehicle came under attack.
