🚨 This has to stop. 🚨
Once again, I’ve received an enquiry that leaves me absolutely lost for words.
A photo of a precious African Grey Parrot— plucked near naked, alone, terrified, sitting in a filthy, empty aviary on a single awful perch… and still being sold at an exorbitant price.
How many more times do we have to see this?
An African Grey is one of the most intelligent, emotionally complex birds on the planet. They require stimulation, companionship, enrichment, and proper nutrition. Instead, this poor parrot is left in a barren aviary with no toys, no comfort, no interaction — literally wasting away.
And then she/he put up for sale for R7500. 🤬
Let’s be clear:
Selling a neglected, psychologically distressed bird in this condition is not “pet keeping.” It’s cruelty.
And it is not acceptable from any breeder or pet shop. Ever.
A person who visited the store described her as “extremely neglected… plucking her feathers… no toys… no human connection… unhappy and ignored while the other birds receive some form of care.” They asked me what they can do — how they can save her.
To that person, and to everyone who sees situations like this:
You should not have to “rescue” a bird by buying it and rewarding the very people who caused the suffering.
The solution is not to feed the cycle.
Instead, here’s what you can do:
🔹 Report the case immediately to the SPCA or your nearest animal welfare inspector.
🔹 Document everything — photos, dates, details.
🔹 Report the store to local authorities responsible for animal welfare and trading standards.
🔹 Share posts like this so more people understand the reality behind many pet-shop birds.
🔹 Support reputable rescues and ethical sanctuaries, not breeders who allow this.
This bird does not need another sale.
She needs intervention, medical care, and compassion.
And for the record — yes, this happened at:
📍 Birds & Pets, 226 High Rd, Pomona, Kempton Park.
If you care about parrots and situations like these, please help shine a light on this.
These incredible beings deserve so much better than this.
