🔴CURRENT NEWS🔴 Matjhabeng MMC accused of awarding R15 million solar tender to his own company

Mojalefa Buti, the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Local Economic Development in Matjhabeng Local Municipality in Welkom, Free State, is under scrutiny following allegations that he steered a R15 million solar farm tender to a company co-owned by himself and his wife.

Buti chaired the eight-member municipal committee responsible for adjudicating the tender, which was advertised by his own department.

An unsuccessful bidder, Fokeng Legacy, claims the process was compromised by a conflict of interest, alleging that Buti manipulated the outcome to favour his business interests.

Matjhabeng is already under Section 139 administration due to longstanding governance and financial challenges. Residents and opposition parties have voiced outrage over the allegations, demanding transparency and stricter oversight of municipal tenders.

“This is a betrayal of the people of Matjhabeng,” said a representative from Fokeng Legacy. “Public funds must serve the community, not personal interests.”

The Hawks are expected to investigate the matter, intensifying scrutiny on municipal governance and accountability.

South African legendary actor Mam’ Nandi Nyembe has passed on at the age of 75. May her soul rest in peace 🕊️💔

It is with profound sorrow that the Nyembe Family, together with the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, announce the passing of one of South Africa’s most treasured icons of the arts, Mam’ Nandi Nyembe.

Mam’ Nandi was far more than an actress; she was the very soul of South African storytelling. A teacher, a guide, and a mother to this nation, she carried our struggles, our laughter, and our victories through every performance with truth, dignity, and heart.

Through her life and work, she gave our people pride and our stories a purpose.
Her journey broke barriers. She inspired young actors in villages and townships to dream beyond their circumstances, showing them that greatness isn’t defined by where you come from, but by how deeply you’re willing to give of yourself. Mam’ Nandi gave us everything. She was the voice that said: “You too can rise.”
As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate her extraordinary legacy.

Her art is eternal; her voice may now be silent, but her spirit echoes in every heart she touched. She lives on in the laughter she brought us, the tears she moved in us, and the dreams she ignited in generations to come.

The Nyembe family added: “Our hearts are broken as we share the loss of our beloved mother and grandmother, Nandi Nyembe. To the world, she was a gifted actress; to us, she was our everything. Her love, laughter, and strength will stay with us always. We are so grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support during this time,” stated Jabulani Nyembe, the grandson.

To the people of South Africa: thank you for embracing Mam’ Nandi as your own.
To the Nyembe Family, the Department expresses deepest condolences and gratitude. Minister McKenzie added: “You shared a legend with us. Her loss is not yours alone but a loss we all feel. South Africa bows its head in sorrow but also lifts its eyes in honour of the life she lived so powerfully.”

South Africa will never forget Mam’ Nandi Nyembe, a woman who carried, lifted, and
shaped the soul of the nation through her art.

🔴CURRENT NEWS🔴 Vala Umgodi crackdown nets over 100 arrests in Lejweleputswa

The Free State police have made major strides in dismantling illicit mining networks and related crime syndicates in Lejweleputswa through the ongoing Vala Umgodi operations.

Over the past week, joint efforts by Proactive and Combat teams, private security, and other law enforcement agencies resulted in more than 100 arrests and the seizure of illegal mining equipment, gold-bearing material, ammunition, drugs, and illicit ci******es.

Key busts included the interception of a truck carrying an excavator allegedly used for illegal mining near Odendaalsrus, the arrest of suspects with gold processing equipment in Thabong, and the discovery of illicit ci******es worth R9,000 in Wepener. A separate joint operation in Mmamahabane saw 25 undocumented individuals detained.

Police say the clampdown highlights the success of intelligence-driven, multi-disciplinary policing in curbing crime linked to illicit mining. Operations are set to continue across the province.

🔴CURRENT NEWS🔴 MACUFE RELAUNCH:
BACK TO OUR AFRICAN HEART AND SOUL

Following the 2025 State of the Province Address by the honourable Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae, as well as the 2025 Budget Vote injunction of the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SACR), the Mangaung African Cultural Festival (MACUFE) will be relaunched in September 2025.

Preparatory work is already underway in the Department of SACR to give effect to the directive for the implementation of a recalibrated MACUFE programme with emphasis on culture, heritage and tradition. The planned presentation of the Sesotho Musical Theatre as part of the MACUFE Theatre Programme as well as the Traditional Dance productions as part of the MACUFE Dance Fiesta, amongst others, underpins the cultural and heritage oriented nature of the recalibrated MACUFE programme.

“Guided by the theme ‘Back to our African Heart and Soul’, the central focus of the recalibrated MACUFE programme will be on arts and culture related activities. Reverting back to its original concept, the festival will therefore elevate the African cultural heritage as a pivot around which our existence should revolve as Africans, and in line with the mandate of the Department of nation building and social cohesion”, stated the Member of the Executive Council for SACR, Me Ntombizanele Sifuba.

The relaunch programme of the festival is anticipated to unfold as follows:

• MACUFE Launch: 01 August
• MACUFE Film Festival: 3 and 4 September
• MACUFE Dance Fiesta: 3 and 4 September
• MACUFE Theatre Festival: 3 to 5 September
• MACUFE Comedy and Poetry Night:5 September
• MACUFE Visual Arts, Craft and Literature Exhibition: 3 to 6 September
• MACUFE Hiphop v/s Amapiano: 5 September
• MACUFE Main Festival: 6 September
• MACUFE Gospel Festival: 7 September

It is further planned that this festival must continue to build on the positive socio-economic outcomes of the previous editions. These outcomes were underscored by the Socio-Economic Impact Study conducted by the University of the Free State: Local economic beneficiation for local entrepreneurs; increased tourism footprint into the province; participation benefits to local artists and so on. The relaunched MACUFE programme will intensify and escalate these local beneficiation outcomes.

More details around the 2025 MACUFE programme will be communicated in due course.
