Future Stars claim victory!

FUTURE Stars FC from the rural village of Khauoe in Ward 25, Matatiele, were crowned champions at the Mayoral Cup awards ceremony last Saturday, September 20. Matatiele Local Municipality awarded soccer and netball clubs for excellence in this year’s Mayoral Cup games.
The games were played from cluster level in April and later moved to quarter-finals, semi-finals and grand finals.
Future Stars FC, Matat netball team and Ingwe TVET College Ladies soccer team were awarded prize money and kits. Matatiele Local Municipality mayor Patrick Stuurman said that this year's mayoral cup awards ceremony was more than celebrating sports excellence but served as a reminder that sport can unite communities. He said sport can build discipline and nurture future talents.

Clubs gear up for cup games

FOUR football clubs in the Matatiele area are set to compete at Matatiele Local Football Association Nedbank Cup matches from Sunday, September 28 at Thandanani Stadium.
The opening match will be between North End FC and Drakensburg FC at 10am. Another match will be between Matat City FC that will go head-to-head with Bhubesi FC at 12pm.
League final games will start from 3pm. Drakensburg FC coach Sizwe Matiwane said his team is ready, well-prepared, and determined to give their best performance.

Drunk driving remains a concern

THE number of motorists arrested for drinking and driving since August 15 has increased to more than 293 in KwaZulu-Natal.

The concerning figures were brought to light after the arrest of 93 motorists in parts of the province last weekend.

Traffic officers from eThekwini Metro, Umsunduzi, Kokstad and Ladysmith activated their operations to save lives on the roads.

In Kokstad 33 motorists were arrested, followed by 24 in Durban, 20 in Pietermaritzburg and 16 in Ladysmith.

“Our Zero Tolerance, No Nonsense, and Alufakwa Campaign will continue to target suburbs, city centres, townships and many other areas,” said Ndabezinhle Sibiya, spokesperson for the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements.

Footballers applauded for provincial selection

FOUR football players from Diski Pros Academy in Kokstad made the cut in the district squad set to participate in the provincial games of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) in December.
They are: Mihlali Mzaza, Moleboheng Maweni, Unam Ganu and Thina Nogcantsi. Last Saturday they played in the SALGA games at district level in Harry Gwala.
In those games, they were selected to form part of the district squad. Diski Pros Academy coach Lindo Xaba welcomed the move and said that it was as a result of hard work.
Meanwhile, Diski Pros Academy is conducting training sessions for the upcoming games in the KZN Sasol Women's League.
On Sunday, Diski Pros Academy will play against Sapphire Ladies at Kokstad Riverview Stadium.

Matric learner stabbed to death.
Police established investigations after a Grade 12 learner was stabbed to death in a school in Humansdorp on September 23. Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said that information in police records indicated that at about 8.15 am a violent altercation at the school among learners left one learner with stab wounds.
The 18-year-old victim was declared dead on the scene.
The five suspects are still at large, and their arrest is imminent, said Nkohli.
