[Just In] In an effort to contain the spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture has prohibited the movement of animals, except for purposes of slaughter.
A positive case of FMD has been reported in the Amahlathi Local Municipality, and suspected cases showing lesions consistent with FMD have been reported in Dutywa, Matatiele, and the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality.
The department is currently collecting samples for laboratory testing.
To mitigate the risk of further transmission, the department has instructed all communities and farmers to refrain from transporting or moving animals across the province for the next 30 days, except for slaughter purposes.

[Just In] Two police officers, aged 24 and 30, have been arrested in Mthatha for alleged extortion.
They are set to appear in court on December 30, 2025, for a formal bail application. Reports indicate that the police officers were visiting taverns, requesting liquor trading licenses, and demanding alcohol.
They are attached to the Public Order Policing (POP) unit. Lt Col Siphokazi Mawisa, SAPS spokesperson in the Eastern Cape, stated, 'On Sunday, 21 December 2025, police received information about two police officials attached to POP, dressed in full SAPS uniform and driving a silver-grey, old model Toyota Corolla, operating in the Khambi location outside Mthatha.'
Mawisa explained that members from Mthatha Crime Prevention were activated, and the District Stock Theft Prevention Task Team monitored the situation.
Upon arrival, members were joined by the National Intervention Unit (NIU), who found the suspects inside the identified vehicle. Mawisa stated that one of the members was found in possession of a service firearm.
'The positive information led to the arrest of the two police members, who were taken in for further investigation regarding their suspected involvement,' Mawisa explained.
