🦴 A Single Injection May One Day Reverse Osteoarthritis Damage
Scientists at the University of Colorado Boulder have developed an experimental treatment that restored damaged joints in animals after just one injection.
The innovative therapy uses a slow-release drug delivery system that is injected directly into the affected joint. Rather than simply relieving pain, it is designed to stimulate the body’s own cartilage and bone cells to repair damaged tissue.
In animal studies, damaged joints returned to a healthy state within 4 to 8 weeks following a single injection.
Even more encouraging, early laboratory tests using human cells from joint replacement patients also showed promising signs of cartilage and tissue regeneration.
While the findings are exciting, it’s important to note that the research has not yet been peer-reviewed, and the treatment is not ready for patients. The next phase will involve additional animal studies to evaluate safety before human clinical trials can begin.
Osteoarthritis affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide and currently has no cure. Existing treatments mainly focus on reducing pain, slowing disease progression, or replacing severely damaged joints with artificial implants.
The research team is also developing an injectable implant that hardens inside the joint and helps attract the body’s own repair cells to rebuild damaged cartilage. Their goal is to create effective treatment options for people at different stages of osteoarthritis.
If upcoming safety studies are successful, researchers hope to begin human clinical trials within the next 18 months.
