Power utility Eskom has announced that stage 2 load-shedding will continue throughout the week.

It cited its “continued shortage of generation capacity” as the reason for the implementation of stage 2 load-shedding between 5pm and 10pm.

Eskom stated on Sunday that it has 3,028MW capacity out due to planned maintenance, while another 14,992MW of capacity is also unavailable due to breakdowns.

“While there may be instances where load-shedding might need to be implemented outside of these hours. As far as possible, Eskom will endeavour to limit the implementation of load-shedding to the evening peak to limit the impact of the capacity shortages on the public,” the utility said in statement on Sunday.

In the wake of yet another court postponement, the family of scandal-prone former president Jacob Zuma has pleaded with the courts to “let the old man rest”.

“We cannot wait until these cases are over. We are really tired. He is tired. These cases never end. Let him rest. When will it end?” said Zuma’s brother Joseph.

The 80 year-old former head of state was at his rural homestead, KwaDakwadunuse in Nkandla, when his corruption trial was postponed to a holding date of August 1 at the Pietermaritzburg high court on Tuesday.

Joseph told TimesLIVE when he saw Zuma last Friday, he was “in good spirits. He was sitting with two women from the Zion church who had brought prayers.”

Senior Zuma family member Khanya said he was happy the former president’s health had stabilised.

Parliament has started to process the state capture inquiry report after it instructed its ethics and members interests committee to look into serving MPs implicated in the report.

This comes after a long battle between the DA and ANC on when parliament should act on the report. The final instalment is yet to be released by inquiry chair and chief justice Raymond Zondo.

The ANC was pushing for parliament to wait for the complete report to be handed to the house by President Cyril Ramaphosa before lifting a finger.

However, the official opposition party pushed back, arguing parliament was a separate arm of state which was not obliged to take instructions from the executive, and this stance was supported by the EFF.

The number of road accidents in SA is almost back to what it was before Covid-19.

This is according to Old Mutual Insure, which made the deduction from trends it is seeing from claims made by clients.

“One of the trends we are seeing in terms of claims is that the number of road incidents such as accidents, including fender benders and more serious events, is almost back to what it was before Covid-19, which is very worrying,” said Lizo Mnguni, spokesperson for Old Mutual Insure.

He said before the pandemic there was a higher frequency of vehicles on the road. During the Covid-19 lockdown, when motorists weren’t using their vehicles as much, the number of claims for road-related incidents dropped.

EFF leader Julius Malema has added his voice to calls for chief justice Raymond Zondo to be held to account for suggesting President Cyril Ramaphosa’s election saved the country.

In part 4 of the state capture report released two weeks ago, state capture inquiry chairperson Zondo said the National Treasury would have suffered irreparable damage had it not been for the ANC conference in 2017 that elected Ramaphosa to take over from former president Jacob Zuma, SowetanLIVE's sister publication TimesLIVE reported.

Addressing the media on Monday, Malema lambasted the remarks, saying they were an endorsement for Ramaphosa’s second term when the party holds its elective conference in December.

“Zondo is a factionalist who supports Ramaphosa’s second term. That’s why he saw it necessary for him to put that Ramaphosa’s election in the ANC rescued us from where we were. He’s effectively saying if you don’t elect Ramaphosa this December, we are going to be in trouble,” said Malema.

The Mozambican truck driver who caused the 2017 horror crash that claimed the lives of 18 people outside Machadodorp in Mpumalanga has been sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment, five of which are suspended for four years.

This means his effective sentence is three years in prison.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said on Monday the Middelburg regional court sentenced Sebastian Macuacua after a lengthy trial in which two crash investigators from the RTMC gave expert evidence for the state.

The crash occurred on July 4 2017 when a truck collided head-on with two minibus vehicles on the R541 outside Machadodorp.

The collision happened when the driver of the truck crossed the centreline and crashed into the two minibus vehicles which were travelling in the opposite direction. Ten people were also seriously injured.

Macuacua sustained no injuries and was arrested on the scene and charged with culpable homicide. Macuacua blamed the accident on one of the two taxi drivers.

The family of a 31-year-old woman who was allegedly shoved into the boot of a car at Kgaphamadi village, outside Groblersdal in Limpopo a week ago, said they need all the help they can to get her back home safely.

Refiloe Malope was allegedly seen by neighbours being forced into a white Toyota sedan on May 9 at about 10am. The car sped off in the direction of Motsephiri, according to witnesses.

David Malope, her brother, said he was called on Monday by his other sister, Tshepiso, telling him that Refiloe had been attacked by people who had initially come and asked for help with their car.

“She was sitting in her van where she lives and the people asked to be jump-started. She said to them that she was also stuck and could not help them. When they left the house they met my sister, Tshepiso, coming into the yard,” said David.

The World Health Organisation (WHO (https://twitter.com/WHO/status/1525759797492162560)) says there are adults and children who experience post-Covid syndrome after infection with the coronavirus. This means developing symptoms long after recovery from the virus.

The organisation’s chief scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan said symptoms of post-Covid syndrome include fatigue and headaches. She said these symptoms can persist for weeks, and in some cases months.

Swaminathan was speaking about the importance of vaccination for children who are eligible for the jab. She said the organisation recommends the vaccination of children above the age of five years.

“The first reason is to prevent children from getting sick and from getting long Covid-19 syndrome, to reduce transmission in the community and to [allow] economies and educational institutions to stay open without having to shut down repeatedly,” she said.

Swaminathan said children who do not have underlying health conditions should not be prioritised for vaccination over the elderly with weaker immune systems.
