The Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) released information on January 29, showing that farmers intended to plant 4.47 million hectares of summer grains and oilseeds in the 2024/2025 season, and the preliminary area to be planted was estimated at4.45 million hectares. Of the preliminary planted area, 2.64 million hectares were estimated to be under commercial maize (white and yellow). The latest CEC report of the 27th of June 2025 indicates that the area planted for commercial maize now stands at 2.59 million hectares, which is of 1.87% less than the initial planting intentions.

The Treaty’s national implementation will require close collaboration between the National Genebank, relevant national departments, Provincial Departments of Agriculture, community seed banks, farmers, civil society organisations, industry and research and academic institutions.

Beyond the 10% contribution from the green energy sources to the national grip, is agriculture South Africa investing on supplementary green energy sources to complement Eskom’s? This is an important but a difficult question to answer due to lack of data. However, looking at Eskom’s Integrated Annual Reports, it is possible to get a sense of direction the sector is taking to transition to green production processes.

Agriculture, particularly irrigated agriculture, is the largest consumer of freshwater resources in South Africa, accounting for approximately 60% of total freshwater use. The water required to produce staple crops such as maize, wheat, and rice is substantial, with estimates ranging from 454 liters for maize to 1,600 liters for rice per kilogram of produce. The situation becomes even more alarming when considering the water requirements for meat production, which significantly exceed those for grains.
