21-YEAR-OLD WOMAN DIES WHILE BUNGEE JUMPING AS STAFF FORGET TO TIE ROPE

SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL - Maria Eduardo Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, lost her life on Saturday after employees at a bungee jumping event threw her off Ponte de Esqueleto (Skeleton Bridge) in Limeira, São Paulo, without securing her to a rope, sending her 130 feet into a ravine below.

Maria was carried onto the platform by two men before being hurled from the edge. Footage circulating online shows Maria had no rope attached to her as she fell 40 meters into a canyon.

Witnesses can be heard in the background frantically shouting that she had no safety equipment for her jump. Maria was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medics.

Five men and one woman connected to the event have been taken into custody. Just hours before the tragedy, Maria, from the nearby town of Jandira, had enthusiastically posted about her upcoming jump on her social media accounts.

Across a series of posts she revealed the jumping location, and showed off her identification bracelets ahead of the jump. She also photographed the company representatives who would later be responsible for throwing her off the ledge, reports The Sun.

In one of her last posts, Maria shared a photo of the company banner, writing: "Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?"

According to police, a witness stated that employees from the company failed to attach the rope before Maria was sent from the platform. Authorities say that two men immediately fled the scene after the accident and were found in a wooded area.

TACTICAL RESPONSE TEAM ARREST TRUCK DRIVER IN POSSESSION OF ESSENTIAL INFRASTRUCTURE COMPONENTS

GAUTENG - On Friday 12 June 2026 SAPS Tactical Response Team operators received a tip-off about a horse-and-trailer truck traveling to Gauteng transporting suspected stolen goods. The White Volvo FH truck was intercepted near a filing station in Glen Police Station precint. The operators conducted a search and copper cables could be seen from some of the torn bags.

The 47-year-old male driver was then requested to turn back to Bloemfontein under police es**rt to Parkweg Police Station grounds.

Experts and investigators from Centlec Ltd, Telkom and Eskom were called out in order to guide the police in identifying the essential infrastructure components. The identification process continued on Bainsvlei Police Station grounds where there was enough space to unload the goods on Saturday 13 June 2026.

The Centlec Supervisor placed at Engineering Wires Section helped the police to identify 35mm copper cable, Air-dac and HT cable insulation from the recovered components. Telkom experts also identified cables belonging to their company.

All together, nine large bags of essential infrastructure components were seized from the truck. Telkom identified 40 kilograms of their property with replacement value estimated at R4 500.00. Centlec Ltd identified 5 760 kilograms of essential infrastructure recovered, at an estimated replacement value of 3 million South African rands.

"The essential infrastructure components recovered were meant to supply electrical power to residential and industrial places. Some of the copper cables are used to electrify the street light.

Copper cable theft deprives law abiding citizens of their livelihood. It is the responsibility of both the private stakeholders, and public roleplayers including the general public to bring tampering, damaging and destroying of essential infrastructure to a halt. If you see something, say something: we commend the swift reaction by members of Parkweg TRT," said the Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Thabang Solomon Lesia.

A case docket of Criminal Matters Amendment Act 18/2015 and suspected stolen essential infrastructure was opened at Glen Police Station. The 47-year-old suspect was arrested and detained in police cells. The suspect is expected to appear in Bloemfontein Magistrate Court on Monday 15 June 2026.

150 SCORPIONS RESCUED FROM ILLEGAL WILDLIFE TRAFFICKING ATTEMPT

CAPE TOWN - The Cape of Good Hope SPCA assisted the South African Police Service and Cape Nature following the discovery of 150 live scorpions that were allegedly being smuggled through Cape Town International Airport.

Acting on intelligence, SAPS members intercepted a suspect and, upon searching his luggage, discovered the scorpions concealed amongst his clothing. Each scorpion had been individually packaged and transported in conditions that raise serious animal welfare concerns.

The suspect was arrested and is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 15 June 2026.

The rescued scorpions are currently in the safe care of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA. We will continue to work closely with SAPS and Cape Nature to ensure that these animals receive appropriate care and that arrangements are made for their repatriation to their place of origin where possible.

Wildlife trafficking is a cruel and illegal trade that causes immense suffering to animals and threatens biodiversity. We commend the swift action of SAPS and Cape Nature in preventing these animals from disappearing into the illegal wildlife trade.
