Sport Update | Chiefs Get Boost: Velebayi and Baartman Cleared to Play

Kaizer Chiefs have received great news in their player dispute with Cape Town Spurs. On Wednesday, 08 October 2025, SAFA arbitrator Hilton Epstein ruled in favour of young stars Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman. This decision declares them free agents, allowing them to finally play for Amakhosi after months of legal battles.

The 22-year-old winger Velebayi and 19-year-old attacking midfielder Baartman joined Chiefs on free transfers in August, following their former club's relegation from the Motsepe Foundation Championship to the amateur SAFA ABC Motsepe League. The PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) had already sided with the players, but Spurs appealed to SAFA, arguing their contracts should still bind them.

Epstein's ruling ends the uncertainty, confirming the duo can be registered and used in matches. Chiefs fans are excited, as both players bring fresh talent to the squad. Velebayi, from Cape Town's Philippi, and Baartman, from Elsies River, have Betway Premiership experience and could debut soon. This win strengthens Chiefs' push in the league and continental competitions.

News Update | Pig Farm Murder Trial Continues in Polokwane

The Sebayeng pig farm murder trial resumes today, Wednesday, 08 October 2025, at the Polokwane High Court. Farm owner Zachariah Olivier and employee William Musora face serious charges over the deaths of two women whose bodies were dumped in a pigsty.

On Tuesday, accused number 3, William Musora, told the court that his boss, Zachariah Olivier, and supervisor, Rudolf De Wet, forced him to help dispose of a body in the pigsty. They told him not to tell the police. De Wet has now turned state witness, so he is not on trial. Olivier and Musora have pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder, attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and defeating justice. Musora also faces a charge under the Immigration Act.

In an affidavit read by his lawyer, Musora said he acted under duress and threats. He helped carry the body but did not know who committed the crime. When he asked Olivier and De Wet, they said they knew nothing about it.

The case involves the shooting deaths of Maria Makgato, 45, and Lucia Ndlovu, 35, at Onvervaght farm in Sebayeng last August. The women were collecting expired food when they were killed. Lucia's husband, Mabutho Ncube, was shot but survived. The state says the murders were planned. The trial is expected to end by 17 October 2025.

On Tuesday, 07 October 2025, she handed over the project to a contractor to resume work, addressing concerns about potential dangers to lives.

Premier Ramathuba emphasized that the issues have been identified, and steps are in place to address previous shoddy work. The resumption of construction aims to deliver a functional transport facility for the community, ensuring safety and quality moving forward.

MAHUNGU | Man Sought for Murder of Infant Son in Malamulele

On Tuesday, 07 October 2025, at approximately 07:40, a horrific tragedy unfolded in Jimmy Jones village, Malamulele, when a five-month-old infant was allegedly killed by his father. The Malamulele Police, under the Vhembe District, have launched a manhunt for the suspect, who remains at large.

According to police reports, the infant’s mother reported a domestic violence incident at the Malamulele Police Station, alleging that her boyfriend, the child’s father, assaulted her. She further revealed that the suspect had repeatedly physically assaulted their baby. Fearing for her safety, she fled the home, leaving the infant behind.

Police accompanied the mother to the residence, where they discovered the lifeless body of the infant on the floor. Emergency Medical Services confirmed the child’s death at the scene. Preliminary investigations indicate the baby suffered visible injuries to the head and face, pointing to a brutal assault.

A murder case has been opened, and police are actively searching for the suspect, who fled before their arrival. Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the act, calling it a “cruel betrayal of parental responsibility and humanity.” She urged the community to provide any information that could lead to the suspect’s arrest, emphasizing the need for justice.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Malamulele Police Station to assist in bringing the perpetrator to justice.

DA MP Awaits Apology from Police Chief Mkhwanazi

A Democratic Alliance MP, Dianne Kohler-Barnard, wants KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to say sorry. This comes after Mkhwanazi said she broke the law by sharing secret police information and stirring trouble against the Crime Intelligence unit. He made these claims during his talk at the Madlanga Commission in September.

Kohler-Barnard says this is not true. In a TV interview with Newzroom Afrika, she said she hopes Mkhwanazi will take back his words and apologize when he speaks to a special Parliament group today, October 7. "He has my phone number. He could have called me," she added. But she does not think it will happen soon.

The Madlanga Commission looks into crime, political meddling, and graft in South Africa's justice system. It started in September and will restart on October 13 after a break due to illness.

Today, Mkhwanazi will tell the Parliament group about his claims of crime groups taking over police work. Some MPs think Kohler-Barnard should step aside from this group because of what he said. She plans to keep watching police leaders closely to make sure they do their jobs right.

People wait to see if Mkhwanazi will say sorry or explain more.

MAHUNGU | EFF Deputy Secretary-General Calls for Proper SAPS Probe

Leigh-Ann Mathys, Deputy Secretary-General of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has emphasized the need for the parliamentary ad hoc committee investigating the South African Police Service (SAPS) to conduct its work correctly from the start. This is to ensure that the findings are not challenged later.

Mathys spoke to the media after EFF leader Julius Malema pointed out legal irregularities just before Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi was set to testify. She highlighted the importance of the committee's role, stating that it must not be seen as supplementary to other investigations but should operate independently as a parliamentary body.

"We have had numerous meetings and briefed the evidence leaders repeatedly," Mathys said. "Our decisions and findings are binding, and we need to make sure we do a proper job."

She also addressed concerns about potential delays, acknowledging that the process has already been derailed due to inefficiencies. However, she stressed the importance of not letting the hard work and resources invested go to waste.

Mathys's comments come as the committee faces pressure to meet its deadline at the end of October to hand over its reports to the House. The EFF's stance is part of a broader call for transparency and accountability in addressing allegations within the SAPS.

News Update | Malema Challenges Mkhwanazi Oath in Parliament Probe

EFF leader Julius Malema has opposed the idea of Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi taking an oath during a parliamentary investigation. Malema argues that there is no statement from Mkhwanazi before the committee, questioning the basis for the oath. He emphasized that the ad hoc committee should not become a subcommittee of the Madlanga Commission.

The probe, which started on July 6, 2025, aims to investigate Mkhwanazi's claims. Malema's stance highlights concerns about the proper procedures and the integrity of parliamentary inquiries.

Sports Update | Makgopa Steps In for Rayners in Bafana Squad

South Africa's national football team, Bafana Bafana, has made a change to its squad ahead of key 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda. Mamelodi Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners has pulled out due to medical reasons. In his place, Orlando Pirates forward Evidence Makgopa has been called up.

This swap comes as Bafana prepares for matches on October 10 in Durban and October 14 in Nelspruit. Coach Hugo Broos named the original 23-man squad earlier this week, with Sundowns players leading the count at seven. Makgopa, who has been in and out of recent squads, now gets a chance to push for a starting spot alongside forwards like Lyle Foster and Thapelo Morena.
