Jack Grealish reignites his maverick spark after leaving Manchester City:
Since leaving the rigid, tick-tock football of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City for the freedom offered to him at Everton, Jack Grealish is looking like himself again.
Four games in the Premier League for the Toffees, four assists, and already a Player of the Month award in his pocket. But it’s more than just the stats — he’s bossing matches, dictating the tempo, and leaving defenders dizzy.
It’s got shades of 2015 all over again, when a 20-year-old Grealish tore Liverpool apart in the FA Cup semi-final for Aston Villa. Back then his manager was Tim Sherwood, now a Sky Sports pundit. Sherwood caught up with him at Everton’s training base this week to chat about his blistering start.
“People were saying, ‘what are you doing going to Everton?’ And I was like, ‘what do you mean?’. It’s a massive club,” Grealish told him.
“I’m at my best when I feel loved. Off the pitch I’m quite vulnerable, and I just wanted to be somewhere I could feel that love again — to wake up and play football with a smile on my face.
“Obviously people have perceptions of me. They say, ‘he likes to go out, he likes to party’. And I do, I’m not going to lie. But there’s a time and a place for it.
“I’ll be honest, I didn’t always pick the right moments — especially at City. I didn’t help myself at times, and I’ll admit that. But it wasn’t only about that.
“People ask, ‘what happened at City?’. But I had two good years there. The first year was about adjusting — the fee, the pressure, the style Pep wanted, the whole environment.
“The second year we won the treble. Unreal. I loved every second. The third year? That’s on me. I didn’t do certain things right, and I’ll own that.”
