You Were Never Really Here review:

This movie was very ambiguous. It spawned a lot of fan theories about what was really going on in the movie. There are multiple ways to interpret the story. This movie was Based on Jonathan Ames' novella of the same name. It has an unreliable narrator as it follows the main character, whose mind is fractured because of childhood trauma, post-traumatic stress from years in the army and his days in law enforcement.

The movie follows Joe, who lives with his frail, elderly mother. He works for a private detective as a hired gun. He is hired to find a missing girl and the story unravels into chaos and brutality as he uncovers human trafficking, s*x slavery and corruption.

This movie was written and directed by Lynne Ramsy, whose previous movie We Need To Talk About Kevin got her critical acclaim and this movie was no different. Ramsy had a unique style and this movie had obvious nods to Taxi Driver and The Big Sleep, with a brave lone figure strolling into an evil world where politics and s*xual exploitation filtered into the top echelons of society. Ramsay did not allow us to see beyond the tight periphery of the frame. The perspective was always from Joe’s point of view. Here was yet another director whose future looks bright in Hollywood.

The star of this movie was the incomparable Joaquin Phoenix. His resume is incredible. He has stared in such movies as Gladiator, Walk The Line, The Master and Her just to name a few. He is always phenomenal in his movies and is one of the best actors of his generation. His performance in this movie was exceptional as he had to carry the movie forward because all the focus was on his character.

I love movies that make you think long after you have left the cinema and this movie sure made me ponder a lot of things. I rate this movie as Good. This brings an end to my list of movies. I hope you have enjoyed it. I look forward to doing more reviews.

Sorry To Bother You review:

This movie tackled racial prejudice just like the Spike Lee movie, Blackkklansman, which I reviewed previously. This movie was also about a black man who pretended to be a white man but unlike Blackkkklansman, this movie has a more surreal, subversive and fearless dissection of identity politics.

This was a hysterical comedy. One of the funniest movies of the year. Its message didn’t hit you over the head but if you were paying attention, there was a lot to savour in this satire about corporate malevolence, and the American tendency to look the other way when confronted with horror. It’s no coincidence that these type of movies have emerged during the Trump administration. Movies reflect the social norms and are a great mirror for society.

This movie was the debut of director, Boots Riley, who was more known as a rapper before turning his talent towards filmmaking. This film recalls the likes of Terry Gilliam, Michel Gondry, and Jonathan Swift. Riley’s film wants, first and foremost, to entertain you, and it almost certainly will do that, especially if you’re willing to go with it on a funky journey, no matter where it takes you. If there’s a common theme to my reviews, it’s that I’m trying to highlight that newcomers to the industry bring new voices and new outlooks to what can be repetitive Hollywood films. I look forward to seeing what Riley does next.

The star of this movie was the great Lakeith Stanfield, who did his best film work to date. His previous movies included Short Term 12, Selma, Dope, Straight Out Of Compton, Miles Ahead and Get Out. Some of my favourite movies to have come out in recent years. He gave a stunning performance in this movie as he always does in his films. Stanfield’s talent is starting to be recognised in Hollywood and his future seems bright. The rest of the cast included the likes of Tessa Thompson, whose star appears to also be on the rise. She simply makes everything she’s in better. There was also Terry Crews, Danny Glover, Steven Yeon and Armie Hammer, who all gave splendid performances.

This movie was excellent. It also didn’t get a lot of visibility in S.A. cinemas which worries me about what constitutes as good entertainment. If you haven’t seen this movie in the cinema I recommend that you watch it on DVD. I rate this movie as Great. Last but not least on my review list is You Were Never Really Here.

Searching review:

This movie was about a 16-year-old girl who went missing and her father's desperate attempts to find her. He used Google, Facebook, Instagram and all the various social media platforms to find her. What was unique about this movie was that it all took place on the computer monitor. We could only see what the character was seeing as he browsed through the internet. This was a gimmick for sure but it was suitable to this movie, unlike other movies that have attempted a similar trick with no reason for the movie to be filmed that way.

What this movie did well was to withhold information from us, the audience. We learnt new information as the characters learnt new information. This created an atmosphere of tension that did not release until the situation of the missing girl was resolved. There were twists and turns in this movie that I will not spoil as the best way to watch this movie is to go in without knowing what will happen as I did.

This was the debut movie of writer, director, Aneesh Chaganty. His bold choice to film the movie in this unique way shows a competence that is rarely seen in directors with much more experience than he does. There are limitations to filming a movie this way and the challenge was to not make the audience get bored of watching one computer monitor the whole time. I’m glad to say that Chaganty pulled it off. This movie was engaging and thrilling and I was entertained throughout.

The star of this movie was John Cho, who was well known for his comedic roles in movies such as American Pie and Harold & Kumar. He seems to be taking on more dramatic roles with movies such as Star Trek franchise and now this movie. He was the main focus of the movie and had to carry the entire story on his shoulders. His performance was brilliant. You could see the anxiety and fear in his face as he desperately tried to find his daughter.

This was an excellent movie. I’m not sure which cinemas are screening it in S.A. but if you get the chance to see it in the cinema, please do because it was worth it. Otherwise, catch it on DVD. I rate this movie as Great. Next on the review list is Sorry To Bother You.

Mission Impossible review:

Action movies are so few these days that you cherish the ones that do it right. Superhero movies dominate the box office and we have forgotten good old fashion car chases, shoot-outs, martial arts and crazy stunts. Luckily for us, Tom Cruise has not forgotten. This was the 6th movie in the franchise and yet it was one of the best offerings I’ve seen. Not since Mad Max: Fury Road have I been completely exhilarated by an action movie.

This was the 1st time that a director returned to the franchise and it was also the 1st time that a narrative continued from a previous instalment. There were callbacks and easter-eggs to previous movies in the franchise. I love when movies take the time to include such fan service, it makes the viewing experience that much more engaging.

The plot in these movies isn’t the most important thing. It is there to serve as an excuse for Tom Cruise to do the most outrageous stunts. The characters are always chasing down plutonium or trying to prevent a prime minister from being assassinated, it doesn’t matter what the mission is, what matters is how they accomplish it.

As I said, this movie was the 1st time that a director returned to the franchise. Christopher McQuarrie has worked with Tom Cruise on several movies. They’ve developed a great relationship of mutual respect and understand exactly what type of movie they are trying to make. McQuarrie began his career as a writer on such movies as The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie and Edge Of Tomorrow. His directorial debut was on Jack Reacher, which starred Tom Cruise and has been giving us some of the best action movies we have seen in recent years. He is not a fan of shaky cam and loves practical effects using wide lenses, long take shots so the audience can see all the action and knows exactly what is going on in each scene. All these traits make him one of the best action directors working in Hollywood right now.

This franchise wouldn’t exist without its star, Tom Cruise. The man is 56 years old and he is fitter than most 20 something-year-old actors. I don’t know if he has a death wish or if he has completely lost his mind but he does all of his own stunts and they are some of the most insane spectacles I’ve ever seen. He learnt how to fly a helicopter in 6 months so that he could perform a stunt for this movie. The 6th instalment of any franchise should be a terrible thing and yet Cruise has managed to inject this movie with heart-pumping thrills and a dedication to the craft that is unmatched by anyone working in Hollywood.

The cast included returning fan favourites such as Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Furguson, Alec Baldwin and Michelle Monaghan with newcomers such as Henry Cavil, Angela Bassett and Vanessa Kirby. Everyone did a great job and Cavil was amazing as this brute, unstoppable force. The facial hair fiasco for Justice League was justified as his character was great in this movie.

The future of this franchise looks great so long as Tom Cruise can still do his own stunts and he doesn’t look like he is about to stop any time soon. This was one of my favourite movie experiences this year. If you haven’t seen it in the cinema, I highly recommend that you see it on DVD. I rate this movie as Great. Isle Of Dogs review:

Stop animation is a very time-consuming form of animation. Every movement in the movie has to be physically manipulated one inch at a time by the animators. A movie that would have taken 6 months to animate traditionally, take up to 2 years via stop animation. So why would anyone put themselves through such a laborious process? Because there’s a quality to stop animation you just don’t get in other forms of animation. The world feels real because it is real. Every object, piece of clothing and hair follicles are created and have a tangible aspect to them.

This movie had fantastical elements to it and that lent itself to this style of animation. Stop animation has come a long way from the days of using clay to model the different characters. Now they have wire mash which they can prefabricate and thanks to 3D printers they can print out hundreds of different facial expression and just swap them for each scene.

The movie dealt with political themes and social injustice. An outbreak of dog flu had spread through the city of Megasaki, Japan, and Mayor Kobayashi had demanded all dogs to be sent to Trash Island. On the island, a young boy named Atari set out to find his lost dog, Spots. The tone and themes of this movie were for adults. Some of the characters spoke Japanese so it required subtitles which children might find tedious to read. There were plenty of slapstick comedic moment that children would enjoy but I’d say the majority of this movie wasn’t designed for them.

This is the 2nd animated movie of the director, Wes Anderson, his 1st, Fantastic Mr Fox was a critical and commercial success and one of my favourite animated movies of all time. Anderson has a very unique style of filmmaking. You know immediately that its an Anderson film because of his trademark style of filming. He loves central frames and tracking shots, wacky characters and Bill Murray in almost every movie he makes. He is one of the few directors, whose movies I’ll go see, no matter what genre or subject matter they are filming because I know I’ll see something I’ve never seen before and that’s a rare talent.

Actors love working with him and his movies are always ensemble pieces and this one was no exception. The voice cast of this movie included such talent as Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Greta Gerwig, France McDormand, Scarlett Johannson and Harvey Keitel. The performances were brilliant and the characters were quirky and unconventional and that’s just how I like Wes Anderson movies.

I loved this movie. I wish it had been released to all the cinemas because I had to go to a specific cinema just to watch it. If you haven’t seen this movie in the cinema I recommend you watch it on DVD. I rate this movie as Great. Next on the review list is Mission Impossible: Fallout.

Incredibles 2 review:

Pixar animation is the leading animation studio in the world. Now under the control of Disney, they haven’t produced the same quality of work as they used to in the past. The 1st Incredibles movie was one of the best animated movies of all time. I consider it one of the best superhero movies of all time. So this movie had a lot to live up to.

There haven’t been a lot of great animated movies this year and that’s why I only have 2 of them on my review list. What these 2 movies did that the other animated movies failed to do was to make movies that not only catered for children but adults could watch and enjoy them on an intellectual level as well.

Its been 14 years since the 1st movie and the director, Brad Bird said he wouldn’t make a sequel unless it felt right for him. Bird is a master at animated movies. He gave us The Iron Giant and Ratatouille. Lately, he had ventured into live-action movies such as Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and Tomorrowland. His visual style is unmistakable with bright, saturated colours and clean, crisp scenes. Were he shines the most is in his writing as he is able to conjure some thrilling narratives that put us in the shoes of the characters.

This movie began right where the last one ended. It dealt with themes such as public perception, family dynamics and the dangers of being addicted to media. The villain, Screenslaver had a message along those lines. I wasn’t as fond of this villain as I was of Syndrome in the 1st movie. The villain was not as well developed in this movie. Speaking of family dynamics, there was a role reversal in this movie as the wife was the one going out to fight crime and the husband had to stay home and take care of the kids. The kids had more screen time in this movie as they were the ones who ended up saving the day.

The voice cast for this movie was incredible (pardon the pun). Returning actors such as Craig T Nelson, Holly Hunter and Samuel L Jackson were awesome. They were joined by newcomers such as Catherine Keener, Bob Odenkirk and Sophia Bush, who also did a great job. The stand out performer was the director himself reprising his role as Edna Mode. That character was a scene stealer and enjoyed her interactions with Jack-Jack.

This was a nice follow up to the original but I couldn’t help thinking it came 14 years too late. I had a fun time watching this movie and I’d recommend you see it on DVD if you haven’t seen it in the cinema. I rate this movie as Good. Next on the review list is the other animated movie, Isle Of Dogs.

Hereditary review:

Horror movies tend to follow certain trends. There was a time when “gore” was trending and movies such as Saw and Hostel were popular. Then there was “found footage” and that was popular for a while but now the latest trend has been “jump scares”. It's so refreshing to see that this movie wasn’t going to follow those trends. Blumhouse Studio has been leading the way in giving us original, thought-provoking horror movies that rely on storytelling and great characters rather than cheap scares.

This movie was about a family who suffered the loss of its maternal grandmother and how each family member dealt with the grief of her loss. Things spiralled out of control from then on as there appeared to be a lot that the family didn’t know about its matriarch. The movie played around with our perceptions. Things were lurking in the corners of the screen. We were not sure if what we were seeing was real or just imagined by the characters.

The movie dealt with the occult and conjuring up spirits and as the characters slowly started to learn about these dark subjects, terrible things started happening to them. The loss of the grandmother, followed by the loss of one of the children meant that the family were never going to be the same after that. The family was uncomfortable with frank displays of emotion, and with anything that might reveal their interiors to one another. Unspeakable things happened to the family throughout. Every time they experienced a new trauma, it cracked their controlling façades a bit more and exposed emotional fissures in the family as a whole.

This was the debut movie of director, Ari Aster, who also wrote the film. He was inspired by a wide variety of classics such as Rosemary’s Baby, The Exorcist and The Shining. The tension in some of the scenes was unnerving. The regular eruptions of weirdness, surrealism and nightmare spectacle lived in the spaces where family arguments and breakdowns might occur in a realistic movie. Aster and the cast made you care about these disturbed people and fear what they might do to one another, themselves and strangers. When something awful invariably happened, you felt sadness as well as shock, because now it was going to be even harder for the family to climb out of the pit of sadness that the grandmother's death cast them into.

Speaking of the cast, the movie starred Toni Collette. She is such an underrated actor. She brings such raw, emotional and visceral performances to all her movies and this one was no exception. She should get a lot of awards for her performance in this movie because she was phenomenal. The rest of the cast were incredible as well with the likes of Ann Dowd, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff and a stand out performance from Milly Shapiro, who gave a disturbing, unsettling performance. She is a young actor who has a bright future ahead of her in Hollywood.

This movie was horror filmmaking at its finest. I can’t wait to see what Aster does next. If you haven’t seen this movie in the cinema, you should watch it on DVD. I rate this movie as Great. Next on the review list is Incredibles 2.

Game Night review:

This movie was about a group of friends who regularly visited each other for game night, hence the title. On one particular night, they played a murder mystery game. Little did they know that actual kidnappers came and took away one of the friends. They all thought its part of the game and played along not realising that they were in danger. All kinds of comedy ensued.

This was a raucously funny film that started out borderline ludicrous and kept piling on improbabilities. If you've seen "The Game" or other films in which an escapist adventure turns weird and frightening, you'll anticipate some but not all of the twists and turns of this movie and you'll appreciate the way that the screenwriter and director tied them to the psychology of the characters, and structure the film as a journey of personal as well as narrative discovery.

This movie was directed by Jonathan Goldstein, whose well known for his writing, having worked on such TV series as The PJ’s, The Geena Davis Show and Bones before working on movies like Horrible Bosses, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs and Spider Man: Homecoming. He made his directorial debut on the movie Vacation and this was his 2nd movie. Goldstein’s writing ability has allowed him to plot a movie that twists and surprises at every turn. There was this one sequence where the characters were trapped in a mansion and it was all shot in one long take and it was brilliant. I love his style of comedy and look forward to seeing what he works on next.

The stars of this movie were Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, who are no strangers to comedy movies. Their on-screen chemistry was amazing and they lead this film with effortless craft and charm. The rest of the cast was terrific as well with the likes of Kyle Chandler, Lamorne Morris, Kylie Bunbury and a stand out performance from Jesse Plemons, who played that one friend that no one wanted to invite to the party. He stole the show on every scene he was in and the awkward encounters he had with his friends were hilarious.

Game Night was a nearly perfect piece of entertainment for adults. The end credits were pure genius. If you haven’t seen this movie in the cinema, you should go watch it on DVD. I rate this movie as Good. Next on the review list is Hereditary.
