NPA Welcomes SCA Ruling Against Dr Magudumana’s Deportation Appeal

📍 Bloemfontein | 16 May 2025
By HMR News Updates

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) to dismiss Dr Nandipha Magudumana’s deportation appeal, reinforcing the legality of her return from Tanzania in April 2023.

The ruling, delivered today, upholds the 2023 High Court judgment by Judge Loubser, who found no grounds to declare Dr Magudumana’s arrest and deportation unlawful. While a minority opinion within the SCA supported her appeal, the majority judgment has paved the way for the long-awaited trial to proceed.

Dr Magudumana, a key figure in one of South Africa’s most high-profile criminal cases, is accused alongside several co-accused of a series of serious crimes. The charges span 38 counts, including:
• Fraud
• Corruption
• Money laundering
• Assisting an inmate to escape
• Violation of a co**se
• Arson
• Defeating the ends of justice

The NPA stated:

“We are satisfied with the SCA’s decision and will now focus on ensuring the trial proceeds without any unreasonable delays.”

The matter has been set down for trial in the Free State Division of the High Court in Bloemfontein, from 21 July to 19 September 2025.

This ruling marks a critical step in holding those implicated accountable and upholding the rule of law.

TWO GRAVES DUG UP, BONES FOUND IN BED — MAN ARRESTED IN MASOYI | HMR News Updates

April 30, 2025 | HMR News Desk – Masoyi, Mpumalanga

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Masoyi near White River, police have arrested a 29-year-old man after he was found sleeping in bed next to human bones allegedly dug up from the graves of his father and grandfather.

The unsettling discovery was made on Monday, 28 April 2025, after a local woman walked into the Masoyi Police Station at approximately 13h30, reporting that two adjacent graves had been tampered with at the Swalala Cemetery.

Police from the Visible Policing Unit quickly responded to the scene, where they confirmed the desecration of the graves. The graves were identified as those of the suspect’s father and grandfather, who were buried in 2010.

Acting swiftly, police traced the suspect to his home in the RDP section of Swalala. Upon entering the house, officers were met with a chilling sight — the man was asleep in his bed with bones believed to be from the exhumed graves lying beside him.

The suspect was immediately arrested and charged with violation of graves, a serious criminal offense under South African law. The bones have been confiscated as evidence, and an ongoing investigation has been launched by the South African Police Service (SAPS) to determine the motive behind the act and confirm the identity of the remains through forensic analysis.

The man is expected to appear in the Masoyi Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 30 April 2025.

The incident has raised alarm in the local community, with many residents expressing shock and concern over the desecration of the resting places of the deceased.

SAPS has urged the public to remain calm and allow the law to take its course while investigations continue.
