🏛️ A Piece of Matatiele History Still Standing

Many people know it today as the Royal Courtyard, but long before that, this iconic building was known as the Royal Hotel — one of Matatiele’s historic landmarks dating back to around 1919.

Situated in the heart of town on Main Street, the Royal Hotel was more than just accommodation. In the early days of Matatiele, buildings like this served as gathering places for travellers, traders, officials, and the local community during the growth of the East Griqualand region.

One of the most fascinating local stories linked to the building is the claim that the “last formal duel in South Africa” reportedly took place behind the hotel grounds many years ago — adding even more mystery and character to this historic site.

Over the decades, the building has witnessed generations of Matatiele’s people, stories, business, celebrations, and change — remaining part of the town’s living heritage.
As Matatiele continues to grow, it is important that we remember and celebrate the places that carry our history.
