Steve and Lulu Black on Balam River Deck - their coffee shop on the Umzimkhulu river outside Underberg.

At Khotso Lodge and Horse Trails, Steve and Lulu offer horse riding and hiking in the Southern Drakensberg and into Lesotho. Steve is 70 years old and he’s a legend in endurance sport circles: He has nine gold medals in the Dusi Canoe Marathon, 11 silver Comrades Marathon medals; he won the 120 km Lesotho Wild Run in 2012 and still holds the course record; he won the 270 km Wild Coast Ultra Marathon twice and the 85 km MUTTER trail run in the Southern Drakensberg six times. Last year, at the age of 69, he came second.

“The young bucks are a little bit stronger than me now,” he says with a smile.

Na drie blerrie rowwe weke, hardloop ons nou weg berge toe.

As jy my soek, sal ek hier by (in die eerste foto) wees, voor 'n knetterende kaggel met 'n glas rooiwyn. En as ek genoeg moed bymekaar kan skraap, dalk in 'n yskoue rivier of rotspoel op die Boesmansnek-grenspos by Lesotho.

Ek het in Maart hierdie foto's vir geneem. Kyk uit vir die artikel oor Underberg en sy lekker mense in die volgende tydskrif.

Dis altyd 'n visuele fees by ! 😍

Die vryskutlewe is lekker opwindend die laaste ruk. Op 'n Woensdagoggend - op pad terug na die Laeveld van Tugelamond in KZN - kry ek die boodskap oor Shalati se nuwe 'Trackside Dining Area' wat ek Vrydagaand in Skukuza moet afneem. En, die Maandagoggend is dit Madikwe-natuurreservaat toe vir 'n Prontuit-wegbreek.

The one moment you're young and hip... and the next, you simply can't wait for your daily Birdle bird guessing game. And, the Sasol eBirds app as a 37th birthday gift makes you giddy. 😀

I've always been aware of how interesting birds are, thanks to my mom who is an avid birder, but I have definitely entered my twitcher era now. So, let's use that app:

Let me know if I've ID'd any birds incorrectly. Thank you to : last month I used her Sigma 150 - 600 mm f/5 - 6.3 lens on this 3 day trip to Shingwedzi and Tsendze in the Kruger National Park. If you are looking for birthday gift ideas for me for next year, this lens is right up there. 😉

Janine en Gavin Kocovaos van Kokiville Homestead het vier jaar lank in hulle 1973-model Ford skoolbus gewoon toe hulle in 2016 van Johannesburg na die Laeveld verhuis. 

“Dit het lank gevoel,” bieg Janine. "Jou spasie vir klere en pakplek raak vinnig ‘n irritasie, maar Patsy die bus het ons geleer om met minder goed klaar te kom”.

Vandag word Patsy gebruik om gaste by Kokiville Homestead te huisves. Op ‘n lappie grond 13 km buite Nelspruit kan vakansiegangers kies tussen ‘n bus, ‘n tipi-tent of twee huisies wat uit skeepsvraghouers gebou is. 🚍 🏕

The first time I walked past The Narrows was in 2018 while doing Kaapsehoop's 60km, 4 day hike. It was used as a camping spot for hikers from 1987 until the 90s.

Since then, locals periodically camped here, or used it as a stopover for their horse trails.

I've hiked or ran past here countless times, dreaming about fixing it up as a tourism spot... and that is exactly what John Mos and Zelda Lombard are doing!

They started renovations in September and have been living here since December. These two homesteaders have worked incredibly hard and still have loads of work to do - The Narrows looked rough before they arrived.

I met John in 2019 while doing a story on his Tipis Africa Guest Lodge at The Rest, 8km outside Nelspruit. Here, you could step back into the American Old West and sleep in John's tipi tents, which he builds himself.

The plan is to create an off-the-grid spot for hikers and to rest for the night before carrying on with your walk or horse ride. 🐎
