Hierdie week op Prontuit neem ons aanboord die Léon Thévenin - die skip wat ons ondersese internetkabels onderhou.

Daar is omenby 40 skepe in die wêreld wat hierdie werk doen. Die Léon Thévenin is die enigste een wat permanent in Afrika gestationeer is. Sy is so lank soos 'n rugbyveld, styg drie verdiepings bo die water uit en word deur sowat 60 mense - meestal mans van Afrika - beman.

“Hierdie spul ganse het oor Desember by die dam opgedaag en net besluit om te bly. Ons weet glad nie waarvandaan hulle kom nie,” lag Daan Pfahl.

'n Donkie tussen die perde. 🫏 🐎 🐎 🐎

Ek d**k dit moet 'n gesegde wees. Iemand wat nie heeltemal in die groep pas nie - dalk nie so fênsie soos die res is nie - maar dit pla hulle ook glad nie. Inteendeel, dit lyk altyd of die donkie die lekkerste tyd het.

How it Started vs. How it's Going 🐻

Poor Teddy didn't really have a choice... he was forced to love water and adventure from the very first day he came home with us.

From houseboats at Vygeboom as a three-month-old pup to the small dam near our house today. In December, he'll be a year old! 🎂

Steve and Lulu Black on Balam River Deck - their coffee shop on the Umzimkhulu river outside Underberg.

At Khotso Lodge and Horse Trails, Steve and Lulu offer horse riding and hiking in the Southern Drakensberg and into Lesotho. Steve is 70 years old and he’s a legend in endurance sport circles: He has nine gold medals in the Dusi Canoe Marathon, 11 silver Comrades Marathon medals; he won the 120 km Lesotho Wild Run in 2012 and still holds the course record; he won the 270 km Wild Coast Ultra Marathon twice and the 85 km MUTTER trail run in the Southern Drakensberg six times. Last year, at the age of 69, he came second.

“The young bucks are a little bit stronger than me now,” he says with a smile.

Na drie blerrie rowwe weke, hardloop ons nou weg berge toe.

As jy my soek, sal ek hier by (in die eerste foto) wees, voor 'n knetterende kaggel met 'n glas rooiwyn. En as ek genoeg moed bymekaar kan skraap, dalk in 'n yskoue rivier of rotspoel op die Boesmansnek-grenspos by Lesotho.

Ek het in Maart hierdie foto's vir geneem. Kyk uit vir die artikel oor Underberg en sy lekker mense in die volgende tydskrif.
