Lulekani police in Limpopo have opened a case of concealment of birth following an incident involving a 17-year-old girl from the Humulani area in Lulekani.
It is alleged that on Saturday, 23 May 2026, the teenager attempted to terminate a pregnancy after reportedly receiving traditional medicine from a sangoma. She later experienced severe pain and allegedly gave birth in a toilet, where the newborn baby was left alive inside the pit latrine.
Reports indicate that the teenager and her mother later went to Humulani Clinic before she was transferred to Maphutha Malatji Hospital. Medical staff allegedly became suspicious and contacted police.
Police conducted a search at the family home and reportedly heard a baby crying from inside the toilet pit several hours later. The infant was rescued alive.
Police investigations are continuing and the suspect is expected to face charges.
