Poetry in McGregor

Poetry in McGregor We've held an annual festival, celebrating poets & muses, at Temenos Retreat since 2013 . The festival expresses depth, light, beauty, reflection & rejoicing.

Each festival produces an anthology. So poems take wing & fly far beyond to the lives of others. Feast with us, on the heart’s food, the resonant human voice, the felt reality of who we are, the quiet of the cricket’s night and the exuberant possibility of the peacock’s day. There is no theme, no purpose, no rule, no truth, no meaning imposed. Just a few days of freedom for poets and poetry lovers

. Rage, whisper, sing, declaim, laugh, preach, chatter, wail….carouse and sleep. As I should be, in McGregor.

The McGregor Poetry Festival

Dear fellow poetry lovers,

After much reflection, our Festival Committee has taken the decision to no longer host our Annual event.

As many of you are aware, finding funding for the Arts in South Africa has become increasingly difficult with companies channeling their financial support into many varied social initiatives, many of which are in dire straits. It is also unreasonable, in the current financial climate, to expect poets to self-fund. Added to our budget deliberations was the fact that any coordinator, secretary and accountant cannot be expected to give of their time and energy without acceptable remuneration.

Needless to say, our decision was very difficult as our committee is emotionally invested in the festival, which has enjoyed a phenomenal success over the past decade. Each year it felt as if a family was gathering to honour and celebrate our mutual love for the art but also to enjoy one another’s good company. On behalf of our fabulous past committees I wish to thank all the poets who so enthusiastically embarked with us on what has been a fulfilling and heartwarming journey.

Even though there will no longer be an annual event, we are hoping that Temenos will always be a ‘home for poetry’. Should poets wish to organize their own gatherings or launches or concerts, or even take time out to complete a book or anthology, you are welcome to contact us to make special arrangements.

Thank you to all poets who generously contributed to making Poetry in McGregor a rich and meaningful annual event. Through you, we have contributed enormously to the pool of South African poetry.
Thank you too to all sponsors and supporters.

With warm caring wishes
Billy Kennedy

The Lemon &Lime Leucadendron Poetry Society, hosted by Julia Kramer Hodge, met recently at the Camel Rock Restaurant to celebrate the life and poetry of Margaret Clough (1934-2024), known to us all as Margie.

JULIA KRAMER HODGE reports: “Our Margie was an inspiration, the embodiment of ‘Dynamite comes in Small Packages’. She wrote many poems in her lifetime, with five collections under her belt and a sixth to be published posthumously.

“Margie used to come to Scarborough every Wednesday to attend poetry classes with Hugh Hodge. He provided a solid background to poetry in all its forms. Students were taught the whole range from odes, sonnets, pantoums, haiku and more. Each week’s homework was the writing of a poem in a particular style for discussion at the next week’s class. Numerous poems written by Margie at Hugh’s classes appear in her collections.

“The very first time I myself met Margie was here, in the tiny living room of Hugh’s and my home. It has seating for only eight persons. That occasion was mid-January 2014. Hugh introduced everyone: Oliver Price, Douglas James, Jane McArthur, Margie Clough, Pat Louw and me. Each person said a little about themselves. I told them how I had recently moved to the Western Cape from Harrismith and read a poem by ‘someone called Margaret Clow’. Margie burst out laughing and said: ‘It’s Clough, pronounced like rough and tough!’

“Rough and tough, indeed! That’s what Margie was, but also tender and sweet. We, at The Lemon &Lime Leucadendron Poetry Society, will always remember her and are grateful for her poems.”

POETRY IN MCGREGOR: PREPARING FOR THE 2025 FESTIVAL

Our next Poetry in McGregor Festival is planned for the weekend of 12th 13th & 14th September 2025.

The theme is 'Longing for Home', with the Afrikaans 'Heimwee'.

Our annual festivals have served poetry since 2013. The past twelve festivals have allowed us to experience poetry as prayer, poetry as apothecary, poetry as companion, as the benevolent, the wise and the soothing.

We’ve heard poetry ‘tell life like life is’ without shying away from the harsh and brutal realities of social injustice, war, persecution, genocide and inner darkness.

Poets of distinction have shared the stage with emerging poets and young poets, musicians and actors, in English, Afrikaans and Kaapse.

Through the intricacies of ode, haiku, sonnet, rhyming and free verse, villanelle and epic poems, the human heart has been explored and excavated for emotional creativity, love, goodness and inner light.

Although poetry gives, while asking nothing in return, the practicalities of running a festival require money. Unfortunately, fundraising for the arts has grown increasingly difficult over the past few years, with the result that we have no significant sponsorship. We begin each festival a year ahead of time, so find ourselves in dire straits now as we begin planning our 2025 event.

If you have been enriched by our festivals and their accompanying anthologies; or if you are grateful for our contribution to the growth of South Africa’s pool of literature; or if you are a poet whose voice was first heard on one of our platforms and open mics (and then continued to be heard), please consider making a donation towards the preparation of our 2025 festival.

We would be most grateful for any donation you find affordable. You will be inscribed as a ‘Friend of Poetry in McGregor’ and therefor a friend of poetry beyond borders.

Please contact us if you would like to make a donation: [email protected]

With warm regards and many thanks
Billy Kennedy, Patricia Schonstein and the Committee of Poetry in McGregor

We have had to pause and take breath since hearing of the death of Margaret Clough.
She was a splendid member of our poetic community.
She enriched our lives with poems which could be read as postcards from the everyday.
Even though she employed wit and dry humour, she did not shy away from the grit of life.
Lately her poems tackled aging and the approach of death, preparing us, it seems, for her own departure, but also assuring us that there is nothing to fear about our forthcoming autumns and winters.
Margaret was a great presence at our festivals and was the recipient of the 2015 Patricia Schonstein Poetry in McGregor Award.
We will miss her husky voice and deep laugh. We are grateful that she left us so many poems.

Jane de Sousa was the programme organiser for our 2022, 2023 and 2024 festivals.
She put these three festivals together with aplomb, generosity and diligence, interacting creatively with our poets and seeing to the smooth running of events, making each occasion memorable.
Jane has now stepped down from her role, so as to give her undivided attention to the NGO she works for.
We thank her most sincerely for her excellent contribution to Poetry in McGregor.
Jane is a poet in her own right, and we look forward to her participation at future festivals.
“Thank you, Jane!!!”

September sees us bid farewell to two memorable persons – James Matthews (1929–2024) whose death was announced at our recent festival, and Robin Malan (1940-2024) whose death we received notice of this morning.
We honoured James Matthews with the 2014 Patricia Schonstein Poetry in McGregor Acclaim, for a lifetime achievement in poetry and for using his voice as a poet to stand up against tyranny, not for himself, but for the dispossessed and disenfranchised South Africans living under Apartheid.
The Acclaim was presented to him at his home by Patricia and an intern at the time, Hanele Tulke. James was in top form, and we had a wonderful exchange in his garden and colourful voorkamer. It was a pleasure to have known this sparkling, brave, creative man and to have hosted him some years back at our festival. He inspired many poets and gave many young people the courage to speak up against atrocity.
We honoured Robin Malan with the 2021 Patricia Schonstein Poetry in McGregor Acclaim, for a lifetime of service to poetry through his compilation of numerous poetry anthologies for use in schools. These anthologies continue to introduce youngsters to a far-reaching range of poets and instil in them a love of verse, inspiring many to take up the pen themselves. Robin’s award was presented at a ‘Poetry in McGregor at Woodlands’ lunch. Robin was rather frail, but immensely happy. It was a pleasure to have known this generous and inspiring man who taught with passion and withheld nothing that might inspire another.

POETRY IN McGREGOR WENT TO SCARBOROUGH.
The Poetry in McGregor 2023 Hugh Hodge Open Mic Anthology was launched at our 2024 festival earlier this month.
Still hot off the press, we thought to extend its celebration and took it through to Scarborough. We feasted on a delicious lunch which finished with cheeses and fig konfyt. Then we read poems to each other. Outside the sea was rather magnificent.
Julia had found a copy of 'Stimela: Railway Poems of South Africa' compiled by Laurence Wright, at the Tears Charity Shop. There are some excellent poems in this. including 'Men in Chains' by Mbuyiseni Oswald Mtshali.
Here you see Julia Kramer Hodge, Archie Swanson and Oliver Findlay Price, enriched.

READING POETRY WHEREVER: I drove past this kiosk some months back.
There were three men, one inside and two outside. And a dog.
I'm not sure what was being served, maybe pap and head meat; maybe rice and sausage.
Maybe just samp.
Today I went by and saw it all abandoned.
The surrounds were not pretty.
Nothing green grew in the cracks.
It seemed lonely, so I read a love poem:

IT IS A LONG GOODBYE TO THE YOU I KNOW by Yvonne Sliep.

not what you remember
but what you forget

you smile and ask me
the same the same the same
I answer differently
and turn the other way

in the wild is where I find you
inhale you on the mist of the sea
swallow your breathing
when you are not close to me

This beautiful poem is published in 'Touching the Wild: McGregor Poetry Festival 2022 Anthology".

Each year, at our festival, we celebrate Hugh Hodge (1946-2021) through the Hugh Hodge Open Mic and the Hugh Hodge Awards.
Poems read at the open mic are eligible and judging is done in situ.
Hugh was a steadfast, selfless servant of poetry, who contributed to building a confident and significant community of poets.
He ran Off the Wall live readings for almost two decades in Cape Town and brought a towering charisma to our festivals over the years.
This year's open mic was again hosted by Harry Owen.
Judging was by Archie Swanson and Patricia Schonstein.
The Hugh Hodge Open Mic was the second event of the first day of our festive weekend.
It was held in Caritas.
Every seat was taken.
Outside, the garden of Temenos Retreat in McGregor was full of bird song.
