Thandi sat cross-legged on the worn couch in her tiny apartment, flipping through the classifieds in the Daily Herald. Page after page was filled with jobs she either wasn’t qualified for or couldn’t reach. Her eyes darted to a bold ad in the middle of the page. "That's it", she whispered.
*“Exciting Job Opportunities! Young, vibrant individuals needed for overseas positions. No experience required. Excellent pay. Apply now!”*
Her pulse quickened. Overseas positions? Excellent pay? It sounded too good to be true—but wasn’t that what hope always felt like? She raised her eyebrows.
She grabbed her phone, dialing the number printed in large, bold letters.
Came a smooth, professional voice on the other end “Good morning, Career Advancement Opportunities, this is Mr. Zulu speaking,”.
“Hi, uh, I’m calling about the ad in the newspaper,” Thandi said, gripping the phone tightly. “Are you still looking for applicants?”
The applications closed last week Friday, tomorrow people are starting work. I am sorry we didn't write the closing date on that news paper ad. "Oh okay" Thandi said with a low voice. Wait a second let me check something here. "Okay I will hold", Said Thandi, with a hope of good news when the man gets back.
"Oh yeah, it seems as if one applicant did not show up for the interview so there is still one vacant available. "Really!" She replied with an excitement in her voice. "I must say you are one luck person and you sound like exactly the type of person we’re looking for. Can you come tomorrow at 9 a.m. for an interview? Bring your ID, and dress professionally. The address is on Sixth Street, 224 Johannesburg, downtown.”
Thandi scribbled the details down, thanked him, and hung up. For the first time in months, she allowed herself to feel a flicker of hope.
