We Did This Records

We Did This Records A Platform For The South African Underground.
*Birthed In 2011
*Nonprofit We Did This Records is not a "record label". (But possibly not limited to.)

We Did This Records is a D.I.Y (do it yourself) non-profit music distribution / collective from the South African underground. We focus on local (South African) punk rock, folk, ska, crust, noise-rock, post-rock/hardcore bla bla bla... and all that jazz. This loosely affiliated group / idea was conceived around July, 2011 and started out by re-releasing digital copies, for free, of out of print Crust / Punk records made by friends. Later we started having original releases (Free download, and cost price CDRs) and started this blog where we post related and non related stuff that nobody reads. https://wedidthisrecords.blogspot.co.za

After this and many hours/days/years of trying to push ones head through a solid wall We Did This Records adopted a donation based approach (music on the bandcamp page is free if you enter a 0). This was in hopes of making some cash to do some cool s**t with and to alleviate the maddening stagnation. Nobody involved makes a personal profit. Cash (in theory) is used for printing things (like free stickers which we have managed to do a few times so far), cost price CDs, sponsoring recordings, setting up shows, or whatever the collective brain-meat can agree on... (however... in reality, so far, the donations barely cover the costs in keeping the bank account open.) Regardless we still somehow function to a surprising extent, and with the help of Conley, Atomic Garden Studios Middelburg, Matt (Beard), Groundsweep Records, and people pitching in here and there to lend a hand, We Did This Records has somehow not only been a distribution platform, but has also recorded and released music on a negative bank balance. We have also thrown together some tours. Any help sharing posts; helping out with interviews, reviews and other articles for the blog; offering suggestions, ideas, getting discussions going; or just offering a donation on the bandcamp page would all be much appreciated.

Join us Thursday at SK for our 13th monthly Noise Night!

Noise night is a monthly gathering of sonic explorations at the cutting edges of music and sound art. Grounded in a collective DIY ethos, performers are invited to try out new ideas and test the limits of their practices – and the sound system – in a supportive, informal environment. From harsh noise, drone and glitchcore through to acousmatic soundscapes, avant-garde violin solos and sax improvisations over modified field recordings, we welcome all forms of human expression that challenge listeners and deviate from expectations.

Noise night is a 100% free event hosted by Joburg’s best venue, Smoking Kills . Come with open ears (but bring earplugs just in case).

Entanglements is a grassroots DIY festival of exploratory music.

Our first edition runs from 24-6 April at in Johannesburg and 1-3 May at in Cape Town.

Hosted by Sensa, the Sonic Exploration Network of Southern Africa, and growing out of the popular Edge of Wrong festival that ran from 2006-2019, it is an invitation to listen differently, to surrender yourself to a different unfolding of the spatial and the temporal.

And while much of what you’ll hear is intended to challenge, our invitation is a gentle one. We’re not looking to alienate people with squalls of noise or abstruse meanderings on obscure instruments, although there will of course be a lot of noise and obscurity. We’re also not seeking to reinforce the boundaries of an elitist experimental music subculture. Instead, our aim is to create an inclusive, borderless space in which all sounds are equal and genre doesn’t matter.

If that sounds good to you, please join us as we practice listening differently together. Apart from a wide range of performances and improvisations each evening we’ll be hosting day sessions where you can participate in talks and workshops on various aspects of sonic creativity. We’ll also be screening a documentary or two, facilitating some deep listening sessions and probably a lot more besides.

Close your eyes again. Listen. What do you hear? What do you feel? What happens when we stop domesticating sound and allow it to unfold freely? There’s only one way to find out.
