RAF to provide financial compensation to families of Zimbabwean victims of Limpopo bus crash

The South African Road Accident Fund (RAF) says it is required by the Constitution to compensate the families of the victims of the Limpopo bus crash.

The RAF has confirmed that the families of the Zimbabweans who were victims of the bus accident near Louis Trichardt will receive financial compensation.

The fund said it is legally required to pay compensation to all victims, including foreigners and undocumented immigrants, after a 2022 High Court ruling banned discrimination based on immigration status.

RAF spokesperson McIntosh Polela told SABC News that the fund must follow the court’s decision, even though the Immigration Act limits services to undocumented foreigners. The October 12, 2025, crash, which killed 43 people, has caused public anger as many South Africans still wait years for their claims.

In the 2024/25 financial year, the RAF paid R546 million to foreign claimants. This has led to a growing debate and tension between South Africa’s legal duties and public frustration about benefits given to undocumented migrants

TEMBISA - Babita Deokaran, a senior official in the Gauteng Health Department, uncovered massive corruption at Tembisa Hospital, highlighting R850 million in suspicious payments to over 200 companies.

19 days after filing her report in July 2021, she was shot and killed outside her Johannesburg home. While six men have been convicted and sentenced to life for her murder, the masterminds remain unidentified. Her assassination sparked widespread outrage and prompted large-scale SIU investigations into billions of rands looted from public healthcare.

With the release of the SIU’s latest report, SIU head Andy Mothibi confirmed that a syndicate operated at Tembisa Hospital, linking 41 suppliers to businessman Hangwani Maumela, a relative of President Cyril Ramaphosa, and revealing that three companies were tied to alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

The report shows more than R2 billion was looted through these networks. This raises questions about whether Matlala and Maumela may have had any involvement in Deokaran’s assassination for exposing the corruption.
