Former Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) founder and President Emeritus Prince Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi has died at the age of 95.

His passing was confirmed by a statement released by his family. Part of the statement read: “It is with utter grief that we, the family of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi MP, announce the passing of South Africa’s truest champion and greatest servant, our father, uMntwana wa KwaPhindangene.

An ailing Buthelezi was hospitalised in Durban’s St. Augustine’s hospital in July. Despite reports at the time that he was battling a terminal illness, his spokesperson Liezl Van Der Merwe poured cold water on these claims. At the time she confirmed his hospitalisation for the routine treatment of a back problem.

Buthelezi was subsequently moved to the intensive care unit where he spent a few weeks before being discharged into the care of his family.

Zuma, Thales matter returns to court

The fraud and corruption trial of former president Jacob Zuma and French arms company, Thales is expected to resume on Monday morning.

The two accused are facing 18 counts of corruption, money laundering, tax evasion, and racketeering in connection with a multibillion-rand weapons deal in 1999.

According to reports, Monday’s date has been set down as a holding date by Judge Piet Koen, pending the finalisation of Zuma’s appeal at the Constitutional Court in his pursuit for the recusal of lead prosecutor in his corruption case, advocate Billy Downer

This comes after an attempt by Zuma's legal team to remove Advocate Billy Downer as prosecutor over claims of bias.

The National Prosecuting Authority have strongly opposed Downer's recusal, saying that they do not want any more delays in the matter.

“We will vigorously oppose the application and now that they supplemented accusing him of leaking the medical records to the media, we dispute that. Mr Downer is a prosecutor of integrity," said the NPA in a statement.

Mbalula must account for Pongola's horror crash

After the horrific accident that killed 21 people, including 19 school children, between the truck and a bakkie on Friday, calls for minister Fikile Mbalula to account are mounting.

This comes after a twitter user who goes by the name of shared messages he has been sending to minister Mbalula, begging for help on that same road. In some cases, he even shared videos with the minister, indicating how dangerous that road is, as truck drivers operate lawlessly.

A tweet from June 13,2019 read: " I am from a small town called Pongola in Northern KZN, we have N2 crossing in the middle of the town, there are no robots to control the traffic and it is only a matter of time before a huge accident that will take many lives happen..."

He further mentioned that, their pleas to the municipality to repair the road and install traffic lights fell on deaf ears.

As early as three weeks ago in August 26,2022, again pleaded with minister Mbalula and SANRAL for help. He wrote
" Trucks are killing us on the Pongola N2 , no traffic cops manning this route except local traffic cops when trucks get to town. We request your urgent intervention." No reply came from either the minister or SANRAL

However, in the contrary, a celebrity known as Anele Mdoda wrote a tweet to the minister about potholes that damaged two of her tyres, the minister responded immediately instructing Anele to DM (direct message) him.

Black Twitter now suggests that, should been a celebrity, those 21 people would still be alive, because the minister would have taken him seriously.

Meanwhile, the driver who fled the scene after the accident, handed himself over to the police on Saturday. He is expected to appear before the Pongola Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

It is expected that the community will come in numbers to see the mass murderer who cut the lives of many young children short, MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in KwaZulu-Natal, Mr Sipho Hlomuka will be in attendance in court.

The British Royal Family has confirmed the passing of the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II.

"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow." read the statement published by the Royal House.

BREAKING NEWS : Former President of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev has died at 91.

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev died on Tuesday night after a serious and protracted disease, he was 91 years. He will be buried besides his beloved wife Raisa who died in 1999. Lauded in the West as the man who helped bring down the Berlin Wall and end the Cold War without bloodshed, Mikhail Gorbachev was widely despised at home as the gravedigger of the communist Soviet Union.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has already expressed his “deepest condolences to Gorbachev's family. Gorbachev, the last Soviet president, forged arms reduction deals with the United States and partnerships with Western powers to remove the Iron Curtain that had divided Europe since World War Two and bring about the reunification of Germany.

Court grants VBS Bank rights to seize Zuma's Nkandla assets

Former president Jacob Zuma is again under fire as Pietermaritzburg Court ruled that he must ‘pay back the Nkandla money’ after he defaulted on payments owed to VBS.

The troubled bank, now under a curatorship, applied to reclaim around R6.5 million owed to them by the former president.

Zuma agreed to make 240-monthly repayments of R70 000 for his ‘security upgrade at his Nkandla homestead. However, it is reported that former President Zuma stopped paying the loan back in 2018 – just half a year after he resigned as president and never completed the repayments as scheduled.

Should he fail to raise the R6. 5 Million, Zuma may have to ‘hand over’ some of his remaining assets

As a result of this judgment, the former president could be forced to give-up the following assets:

His cattle, which are estimated to be worth thousands of rands each.
Items of furniture, including his infamous ‘red chair’ that has been seen in many of his home photographs.

However, iNkandla homestead itself cannot be attached as part of assets as it stands on Ingonyama Trust land.

TRANSNET FORMER GROUP CEO BRIAN MOLEFE AND FORMER CFO ANOJ SINGH AND OTHERS ARRESTED

Former Group Chief Executive of Transnet Mr Brian Molefe, and former Group Chief Financial Officer Anoj Singh, Regiments Capital Directors Niven Pillay and Litha Nyhonhya appeared before the Palm Ridge Specialised Crimes Court on Monday morning after being arrested by the NPA’s Investigating Directorate, assisted by the Hawks.

The former Transnet executives and their co-accused are charged with contravention of the PFMA and fraud, while the other accused are charged with fraud, corruption and money laundering.

The senior executives arrested today were granted bail of R50 000 each. The accused are Pillay, Nyhonhya, Molefe and Singh, the bail conditions include handing in of their passports. The state further issued warrants of arrest for Salim Essa and Ashok Narayan who is currently out of the country. All of the accused are expected to return to court on the 14 October 2022.

There won't any lawlessness tolarated on the national shutdown - Bheki Cele

The Minister of Police Bheki Cele has warned that any lawlessness will be dealt with dicisively during the planned national shutdown.

This comes after the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure confirmed that they are aware of posts on social media calling for a national shutdown.

In a statement released on Tuesday afternoon, it said, law enforcement agencies are on high alert to ensure the safety of citizens and has discouraged people from taking part in illegal activities.

Local policing forums have been urged to work with police to prevent any lawlessness in communities.

The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) led by Zwelinzima Vavi plans to lead thousands of workers and activists in a nationwide strike on Wednesday (24 August) against high unemployment, increased electricity tariffs and steep increases in fuel and transport costs.

The trade union federation has asked all unions to join the strike but only a handful have agreed to down tools on 24 August, Saftu SG Vavi told the news reporters.
