Patrice Motsepe Reelected as CAF President, Pledges to Elevate African Football
In a unanimous decision, Patrice Motsepe has been reelected as the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for a second term of four years. This milestone comes on the heels of his highly successful first term, during which he oversaw a significant financial turnaround of the organization and restored the image of African football on the global stage.
As a renowned businessman, Motsepe brings a wealth of experience to the table. He serves as the Non-executive chairman of Harmony Gold, the world's 12th largest gold mining company, and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the World Economic Forum. Additionally, he is the owner of Mamelodi Sundowns, a prominent South African football club.
Motsepe's re-election was unopposed, demonstrating the confidence that African football stakeholders have in his leadership. In his acceptance speech, he emphasized the importance of government support in developing football on the continent and encouraged heads of state and the private sector to partner with football organizations.
During his second term, Motsepe plans to focus on making African football globally competitive, stabilizing finances, and investing in infrastructure. The election also saw the appointment of new members to the CAF Executive Committee, including Samuel Eto'o, the former Cameroonian football legend and current president of the Cameroonian Football Federation.
