Every great journey begins with a platform.

Operatic baritone Thabang Edward Phiri reflects on the importance of the South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod as a space where young South Africans discover their talent, grow in confidence and find a place to belong.

Every voice tells a story.

This is one of the many voices that welcomed Choral Mag back during SASCE 2026.

“This is Choral Mag. The Voice Returns.”

Another familiar face joined the chorus. 🎹

Pianist Richard Makwea also stopped by to lend his voice to the revival.

“This is Choral Mag. The Voice Returns.”

Thank you for being part of the journey.

🎙️ CHORAL MAG CONVERSATIONS | SASCE 2026 | DAY 4

We caught up with Kabelo Matabane, choral practitioner, to hear his thoughts on the future of choral music.

Kabelo commended the remarkable talent showcased by the participating schools and reflected on an important next step: creating a stronger bridge between school choirs and the community choir movement, where young singers can continue to develop beyond SASCE.

He also observed that many countries investing in strong community choir structures are seeing that reflected on the international stage. For him, strengthening that pathway is an opportunity for South African choral music to continue growing and competing at the highest level.

🎙️ CHORAL MAG CONVERSATIONS | SASCE 2026 | DAY 3

We wrapped up day 3 with Bongani_Drama and asked him what message he has for choirs and musicians.

His advice was simple:

Use social media. Tell your story. Let people discover your work.

In today’s world, talent and visibility go hand in hand. Every rehearsal, every performance and every milestone is an opportunity to build your audience and preserve your journey.

Thank you, Bongani, for sharing your insights and for your kind words about Choral Mag’s contribution to telling the stories of our choral community.

The music isn’t only on stage…

The excitement is in the audience too. 😊

We caught a few supporters enjoying the day and making memories with the Choral Mag frame from inside the hall.

If you spot us, don’t be shy—come over and say hello!

🎙️ CHORAL MAG CONVERSATIONS | SASCE 2026

We asked Nkululeko Mfadu, conductor of Leonard Ntshuntshe Secondary School in Emalahleni:

“What has conducting a school choir taught you?”

His answer: Patience.

Working with young people means understanding that no two learners are the same. Every rehearsal requires listening, encouraging, adapting and believing in each chorister’s potential.

For him, conducting has been about more than preparing for competitions—it’s been a lesson in bringing out the best in others, one rehearsal at a time.

What has choir taught you?
