The Spider – but definitely not the Spiderweb!
Our ESA/Hubble Picture of the Week features the gauzy-looking UGC 5829, an irregular galaxy that lies about 30 million light-years away. It is known as the Spider Galaxy 🕷️ can you see why? Confusingly, there is another galaxy – more distant, but more extensively observed – known as the Spiderweb Galaxy! 🕸️
Thankfully, astronomers do not rely on these names to identify galaxies. Known galaxies are recorded in at least one catalogue, such as the Uppsala General Catalogue of Galaxies, which calls the Spider Galaxy ‘UGC 5829’. These names might be dull, but they are harder to confuse than names like ‘Spider’ and ‘Spiderweb’!
