According to The Cape of Good Hope SPCA, there has been a rise in illegal snaring that is endangering animal life in the Southern Peninsula's metropolitan areas.

The group claims that its wildlife department answers to at least two calls each month to free animals trapped in snares that are still in operation and may be found throughout the Constantia Valley, Fish Hoek, and even inside the Cape Point Nature Reserve.

A poacher would typically set many snares in an area and often won’t recall all the trap sites, resulting in the discovery of severely decomposed animals.

The commemoration of Youth Day marks the anniversary of the 16 June Soweto uprising in 1976.

Protests began in opposition to the Bantu education system, which included separate schools and colleges, insufficient infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms, the introduction of Afrikaans as a teaching medium, and teachers who were not sufficiently trained.

On 16 June 1976, about 20,000 Soweto students began a protest march. Approximately 700 people, many of them youngsters, were killed as a result of conflicts with the police and the violence that followed over the next few weeks.
