Black writers are not asking for special treatment. They are asking to be met on the same terms as everyone else, to have their work read, questioned and argued with as literature, not as sociology.

Hey, and happy Monday. Another book to put on your reading list...

Eletseha by Tumelo Moleleki. It'll be released in mid-March. R200 for the first 50 copies sold!

What's it about?

Crushed by the end of her marriage, Eletseha vacillates between despairing that she has made a major mistake and hoping that she might find love, in her future, which makes her grateful for the unpleasant chapter of her life that has just started.

Determined to suffer as little as possible, she moves home to enjoy the cocoon of love and attention she will find in her childhood home.

Single motherhood is not easy but her aspirations for her young progeny give her a renewed vigour for life and all that it promises.
A chance encounter with a fellow parent, during orientation at her child’s new school, marks the beginning of a whirlwind existence.

She is in for the ride of her life, experiencing budding love and mounting responsibilities in the form of an adopted young charge.

Is Eletseha destined to find the love she never had in her former marriage?

Asher and I on our monthly library visit. Babalwa Mckonie I found The Longest March…
And finally found Happiness is a four-letter word…I did enjoy the movie adaptations. I’m guessing the book is better.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend 🫶🏽

Book Review Friday!

My first book in 2023 was Crossing the River by Fred Khumalo.
Summary: A young girl and her family desperately wanted to leave Zimbabwe after the brutality they faced. Unfortunately for them they get to cross into even more trouble than they thought .
My view: mmm uhm so I didn’t like it🥹I’ll reiterate that Fred Khumalo is a word artist. He is such a great author both for creative and news writing but with book it felt as if he was in a hurry to release it. I wanted more. It’s certainly not the writing, it’s the story itself. I’d like to think we needed more to Nozizwe (main character) and actually everyone in the story needed more. But that’s just me.
Have you read the book yet?

SUBMISSIONS FOR THE 2023 DINAANE DEBUT FICTION AWARD ARE OPEN!

Jacana Media publishes authors and not just books. With this award, we focus on debut writers, looking to encourage new writing talent. Sometimes wonderful, illuminating and challenging fiction doesn’t get published because publishers are more and more constrained by market forces. Fiction is the one genre where the truths about our society are documented in an uncensored manner. Encouraging and publishing the best of burgeoning South African writers is one way of ensuring storytelling remains a way to understand ourselves and one another.

Back to the grinding again. I truly had a great & relaxing time with family and friends this past festive holiday.
Yesterday I bought my first 2023 fiction by ‘Crossing the River’ from . My initial resolution was to dedicate the first part of my year reading African non-fiction but how could I’ve resisted buying this book? I still have 5 more fiction to get through and yet here I am buying more🥺🤦🏽‍♀️🤣
Any recommendations on non-fiction books I should look out for this year? Maybe if i actually have a book in my mind I won’t be tempted and remain resolute about imbibing only non-fiction books.
Have a great week ahead, Angy. ### 📚
