Festive-Season Crackdown - Limpopo Traffic's Week of Action
*POLOKWANE*– From 1 to 7 December 2025, the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, through its Provincial Traffic Law Enforcement Unit, carried out a province-wide festive-season enforcement operation aimed at curbing reckless behaviour and enhancing safety on the province’s roads. The week-long operation delivered a clear message: dangerous and unlawful conduct behind the wheel will not be tolerated.
Within this seven-day period, seventy-two (72) motorists were arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol. This alarming trend highlights the continued need for intensified enforcement and responsible behaviour during the festive period.
District DUI arrest breakdown:
Mopani: 29 arrests (average BAC: 1.29 mg/1 000 ml)
Capricorn: 24 arrests (average BAC: 1.36 mg/1 000 ml)
Waterberg: 14 arrests (average BAC: 1.20 mg/1 000 ml)
Vhembe: 1 arrest (average BAC: 1.32 mg/1 000 ml)
Sekhukhune: 4 arrests (average BAC: 0.97 mg/1 000 ml)
Zero Tolerance for Unroadworthy Vehicles
During the same period, the Department discontinued 17 vehicles that failed roadworthiness inspections and impounded 39 vehicles for various serious offences.
These offences included:
Driving without a valid driver’s licence or Professional Driving Permit (PrDP)
Operating a vehicle with an expired licence disc beyond the legal grace period
and operating a vehicle that posed serious safety risks
The enforcement operation is part of the province’s ongoing “It Starts with Me” road-safety campaign, aimed at safeguarding all road users, whether travelling to events such as the Mapungubwe Festival, visiting family, or commuting within the province.
By removing drunk drivers and unsafe vehicles from the road network, the Department seeks to ensure that the festive season is marked by joy and safe travels rather than preventable tragedies.
“The safety of citizens on Limpopo’s roads is non-negotiable. Choose the road you’ll be proud to travel – it starts with you.”
