Good news for passports in South Africa

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) is expanding its services at bank branches in South Africa to include passport applications at any of the 300 branches nationwide, as well as home delivery.

This was confirmed earlier this year by Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber, who updated the National Council of Provinces on his department’s budget vote for 2026/27.

The minister noted that while the initial pilot began a decade ago, it was limited to around 30 bank branches. Since July 2026, this has expanded to more than 300 bank branches nationwide.

Absa is the latest bank to join Capitec, Standard Bank and First National Bank, giving South Africans access to Smart ID services through a network of 327 participating bank branches.

As part of the rollout, 12 Absa branches were enabled to provide Home Affairs Smart ID services, joining 109 Capitec branches, 74 Standard Bank branches, and 20 FNB branches, with 60 scheduled to join before the end of 2026.

SASSA PAYMENT DATES FOR SEPTEMBER: A REMINDER FOR BENEFICIARIES UNDER REVIEW

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) wishes to once again confirm that the fourth payment day remains in place for social grant beneficiaries whose grants are under review during the September 2026 payment cycle.

The September 2026 payment schedule is as follows:
• Wednesday, 02 September 2026: Older Persons Grants
• Thursday, 03 September 2026: Disability Grants
• Friday, 04 September 2026: Children's Grants
• Monday, 07 September 2026: Fourth-day payment for beneficiaries whose grants are under review

SASSA emphasises that 07 September 2026 is not an additional general payment day. It is specifically intended for beneficiaries whose grants are undergoing review and who are therefore not paid during the normal three-day payment cycle.

Beneficiaries who do not receive their grants on 02, 03 or 04 September 2026 should not panic or rush to SASSA offices. If a beneficiary's grant is under review, payment will be processed on Monday, 07 September 2026, provided that the review requirements have been met.

Social grant reviews are an important part of SASSA's responsibility to ensure that social assistance reaches people who continue to meet the eligibility requirements and that public funds are protected against fraud, error, and abuse.

Beneficiaries who are required by SASSA to undergo a review should ordinarily have received an SMS notification requesting them to report for the review process. Such beneficiaries are urged to respond within the stipulated period and provide the required information and supporting documentation. SASSA recognises that some beneficiaries may not have received their SMS notifications due to outdated or changed personal contact details that were not communicated to the Agency timeously.

Today, Governor Lesetja Kganyago and Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Sindisiwe Chikunga will launch two new commemorative circulation coins honouring milestones in the advancement of women in South Africa.
