Mkhwanazi Redirects Chris Excel’s Cow Fund to Support Fallen Officers’ Children
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has chosen to turn a social media gesture into an act of compassion for the families of fallen officers.
The initiative began when popular Twitter personality Chris Excel launched a lighthearted fundraising campaign to buy Mkhwanazi a herd of cows, in recognition of his service and leadership in the South African Police Service (SAPS). The idea quickly gained traction online, with supporters contributing funds towards the cause.
Instead of accepting the cattle, Mkhwanazi announced that all the money raised will be redirected to the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET). The trust provides financial support for the schooling of children whose parents died in the line of duty, ensuring they have access to education despite the loss of a breadwinner.
In his statement, Mkhwanazi expressed gratitude for the public’s appreciation but stressed the importance of using the goodwill to benefit those most in need.
“I truly appreciate the gesture, but I believe the families of our fallen heroes deserve this support more. By contributing to SAPSET, we can honour their memory and invest in their children’s future,” he said.
The move has been met with widespread praise on social media, with many hailing it as a sign of selflessness and true leadership.
SAPSET officials have welcomed the contribution, noting that such acts of generosity directly impact the lives of children who have suffered the ultimate sacrifice through the loss of a parent in service.
This development has not only brought attention to SAPSET’s work but also sparked conversations about ways the public can support law enforcement families beyond moments of crisis.
