Exciting new blood recruited to bolster badgersโ performance
South-Western Districts Cricket has announced the professional squad for the 2025/26 season. Following a disappointing 2024/25 campaign, the Garden Route Badgers have appointed Letlotlo Sesele as their new head coach for the upcoming season.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, 3 May 2025.
The most significant changes to the squad are in the bowling department, with exciting new talent recruited to boost performance. The biggest loss is the departure of match-winning wrist-spinner Thomas Kaber, who has joined the Warriors, a Division One franchise. Additionally, Kelly Smuts and Keenan Vieira have retired from professional cricket.
To replace Kaber, the Badgers have contracted former SA U/19 and Warriors spin bowler Liam Alder. The team also raised eyebrows by securing the services of Beni Hansen, the 2024 SA Schools and SA U/19 captain and wicketkeeper-batsman, from Western Province.
Other new recruits in the bowling unit include Banele Cele (from the Dolphins), Mondli Khumalo (former SA U/19 player from the Tuskers), and Zack Momberg, who, like Alder, matriculated at King Edward VII School in Johannesburg and joins from the Lions.
In positive news, the Badgers have retained middle-order batsman George van Heerden, their top run-scorer across all formats last season. He is currently touring Bangladesh as captain of the SA Emerging team. Aggressive wicketkeeper-batsman Luke Beaufort has also signed on for the upcoming season, while Pheko Moletsane, who had a standout 2024/25 season, has been retained.
Top-order batsmen Yaseen Valli, Ruan Terblanche, and Kyle Jacobs will be entering the second year of their two-year contracts with the Badgers.
Responding to the squad announcement, new head coach Letlotlo Sesele said:
โI am excited about the contracted squad. We aim to improve, give a strong account of ourselves, and perform consistently in every competition.โ
SWD CEO Albertus Kennedy added: โWe are confident in the squad weโve assembled for the forthcoming season. We believe the key areas that needed strengthening have been addressed, and we are optimistic about achieving our objectives.โ
